They're facing 65 years in prison
They are on 50,000 Bail, each.
They said they did it to please Slenderman. Slenderman. SLENDERMAN. THE FUCK?!?

There's a reason news stations eat up this kind of stuff; it's largely because these things often come so far out of left-field that an astronomer couldn't have possibly seen them coming. We don't expect these acts because our culture our species has decided that this kind of behaviour is morally reprehensible and completely unacceptable. By frequently reporting on stories that incite the kind of primeval furore that's obvious in the OP, news stations end up with higher viewership counts.
News networks are in the business of making money first, and informing the people second. *cough*foxnews*cough*

This guy raises a good point, though. We hear stories about people doing things like this or those stories about "bad thing happens to old lady, crowd takes pictures" because they're weird and disturbing. "Old lady falls over in mall, polite man helps her up" doesn't make for a headline. That's why good things only make the news when it relates to politics (since it effects a lot of people) or when it's so heroic that it makes you want to call bullshit, like "Diver attacks, kills Great White Shark". I believe he did it to rescue a friend that was scuba diving.
