New Story: "Assassinate Princess Celestia!" and Hybrids in Equestria · 4:32pm May 27th, 2012

When I'm not writing fan fiction or working, I'm editing the second draft of my novel in progress, which goes under the over-long working title of Rag & Muffin: Tales of a Fourth Grade War Goddess, an action-oriented urban fantasy inspired by too much magical girl anime. It takes place on an alternate Earth; its central conceit is that the planet contains two species of rational animal rather than one, and that they are capable of interbreeding and producing sterile hybrids with distinct attributes. The novel explores the implications of this hybridization.

As a child, I was a fan of My Little Pony n' Friends, a.k.a. G1. I discovered G4 after I off-handedly mentioned MLP on my blog and a reader directed me to the new show. Because of my work in progress, I got excited when I found out G4 has mules in it.

Aside from the running gag of ponies casually insulting mules, Friendship Is Magic hasn't dealt with the implications of this and probably never will, but the presence of talking mules is a sure indication that ponies and donkeys sometimes intermarry. What that might mean for Equestrian society is rich ground that, as far as I know, fan fiction writers have yet to explore in any depth (though I would be interested if anypony could point me to a story on the subject).

If you've been enjoying "Princess Trinity," or even if you haven't, you might want to check out my new story, "Assassinate Princess Celestia!," which deals with mules. It's admittedly silly; it takes the real fact of mules' robustness and dials it up to a fantastical eleven, depicting them as capable, in spite of their harmless appearance, of physics-bending martial arts. In this story, the mules are members of a shadowy assassins' guild responsible for guarding Equestria against her internal enemies. But what will the mules do when they discover that the immortal princess they serve has corrupted herself with an excess of cake?
