Petition to tell major news organizations to stop exploiting victims through video and pictures. · 10:09pm May 1st, 2014
"
Every day, major news networks post photos and air footage of people whose lives have been shaken by wars, storms, accidents, and criminal activity. From the mother of a Malaysia Airlines Flight MH 370 passenger to an Arkansas woman left injured and homeless after a tornado, these people deserve to be left alone and not subjected to international scrutiny after suffering such devastating circumstances. It isn't right to videotape or photograph people whose lives have just been turned upside down, who are often bleeding and crying in pain from their injuries, whose clothing has been torn from their bodies, people who are beside themselves with grief at the loss of a loved one.
Most of us would seek to protect our injured children, parents, siblings, and friends from prying camera lenses; no decent human being wishes to intrude on others' privacy by voyeuristically witnessing their pain on the internet, in newspapers, or on television. It is therefore indecent and exploitative to use such footage and photos for the purpose of disseminating news, and it is high time that the networks put a stop to this. Please join me in asking them to do so."
