My Thoughts on the Sonic Boom Trailers · 2:22pm Apr 24th, 2014

Hello fellow bronies. Recently I got a chance to watch the reveal trailers for the upcoming Sonic Boom video game and cartoon. Now I've been a devoted Sonic fan for as long as I can remember (Sonic The Hedgehog was the first video game I ever played), but I have to admit, when I first saw the screen shots and character models for this new line, I was very sceptical; seeing the characters I grew up with get reformed before my eyes was very shocking, though my thoughts were put to rest when I found out this was a separate continuity to the mainstream games.

But after seeing the trailers, my thoughts on this new line were changed entirely.

The first thing that caught my attention was the animation quality... IT'S INCREDIBLE!!! Sonic and Eggman's new appearances aren't exactly half bad; I can see a bit of Classic Eggman in there and also something fresh and new. As for Sonic, the bandages on his feet and hands look cool and the neckerchief is a nice touch, but the blue arms and the new quill style will take a bit of getting used too. Roger Craig Smith and Mike Pollock are in top form as Sonic and Eggman; because the script was written for a western audience, none of the dialogue sounds too corny or badly dubbed, also having their mouths synched to English dialogue is very refreshing after so long. I do like the design of Burn-Bot, and it was a nice taste of what good ol' Eggy has in store for Sonic. I really like Tails' new look; the flight helmet and utility belt suit him perfectly, and the little energy... weapon... thing looks awesome (I noticed Sonic has one too... main weapon?).

Final Thoughts.

I'll give it a watch. It's been almost 16 years since a tolerable Sonic cartoon was around (Sonic Underground is stupid, but bearable to say the least), and getting to see my childhood icon on the small screen once again will do me some good. Also, the stuff that's usually on TV today is pure bullshit, so getting something epic will do the cartoon channels some good. So yeah, I'll watch it.

First Sonic Lost World now this? They're coming up with new ideas fast. First of all, Knuckles and Amy's new looks: Knuckles' had me totally stumped; seeing him tower over the others just didn't feel right at first, but hey, perhaps he'll be fun to play as.

Now, I have a few things to say about Amy Rose in general... I don't like her. She is the most overrated character in the whole franchise, yet in the games she does absolutely to aid the characters or the story in any way (seriously, you could take her out of Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World and nothing will change). But despite that, people can't get enough of her and I really just wish SEGA would drop her out, just once. Her attitude is annoying, her voice is ear-sore and her constant shoehorning into various stories is just a way to attract a female audience, like they haven't got any faith in the game itself to do that. So yeah, I hate Amy Rose, and no one else does... mind boggling.

Back to the game:
As for Amy's new appearance... I really can't believe I'm saying this, but she looks pretty good. Her new outfit and hammer look much more practical than that stupid dress and boots she wore in the previous games, and this time round she looks like someone who can hold out on her own as opposed to the Dumbass in Distress from before.

What about the gameplay as a whole? Since this game has a different development team, Big Red Button Entertainment (who's co-founder, Bob Refei is known for Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune), the game steps up the variety to whole new levels. Getting to play as Tails and Knuckles again after so long will be a nice refreshing change of pace (no pun intended), I'm hoping their gameplay will be more along the lines of what they were in Sonic Adventure and Sonic '06, but more active. Amy's gameplay also looks fun; acrobatics are a new thing for her and I'm curious as to how they will pull it off. Also, co-op is always a good thing to have in a big game; it looks to be in roughly the same style as the LEGO Series, of which I am a huge fan of.

Final Thoughts.

I'm gonna get it; after playing as Sonic for such a long time now with little variety (Sonic Lost World wasn't enough IMO), it'll be a nice refreshing experience to control some of the other characters, who have been given entirely new gameplay styles themselves.

...

I prey to God it doesn't suck.
