LADIES and GENTLEMAN~! (Yugioh ARC-V) · 7:40pm Apr 6th, 2014
Shuffle your Decks, draw your hand and get ready to Duel...'Cause now it's...SHOWTIME~!
What has me all jolly and flashy y'all may wonder? Why, tis the day that the very first episode of Konami's latest work in the anime field premieres - Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V; the fifth incarnation of the card-wielding series which debuted back in 1998 (2000 if you wish only to acknowledge the season which gave us the card game). And my thoughts on this debut episode? ... I liked it. While I could only watch a RAW take online, nonetheless this isn't hinder my experience as I found everything about it more enjoyable than the 1st episode of ZEXAL and there are some serious elements to the story than what the previews and trailers gave us. Not to give out spoilers, I'll give a brief description of the series and 1st episode.
Yuya Sakaki, our main hero who continues the tradition of a hero with 'Yu' in their name, is a energetic youth who dreams of becoming an 'Entertainment Duelist', using his cards for show business. This time around, it's about Action Duels - a system that occurs with touchable holograms which Duelists may move around the field upon, like...Turbo Duels. His father, a professional Duelist named Yusyo Sakaki, was a rising star in the circuit until he vanished before the final match of a tournament against a Duelist known as 'Strong' Ishijima. Fast-forward a few years and Yuya is a student of the Yushow Duel School, a rather...run-down facility. But when a promoter comes around and wants Yuya to take up an exhibition Duel against the man whom his father was to Duel, our hero jumps on the chance to see if Ishjima may know anything about what happened to his father despite the warning of his friends and headmaster.
What happpens...Well, ya'll have to see it now for yourselves anyway. The characters do have a bit of the design style used in ZEXAL but it doesn't hinder. The monsters used look stunning and I quite like the concept they introduce into the show though hopefully we can get some normal non-Action Duels. And a pet peeve of mine with ZEXAL has been solved...In the last series, Synchro Monsters (which came out during the 5D's) were treated as if they did not exist which bugged me. In this...Both Xyz Monsters and Synchros are being acknowledged to exist which makes me happy as a fan of the show and as a collector. Ok - one spoiler but it's not a big one - the unknown monster shown alongside Yusyo looks BADASS, resembling a white dragonic ringmaster with three rings (ya know, three-ring circus?) and I wanna know what that monster does! Eeeeee~!
Uh...Ahem... I do hope that we get into some darker themes that could make the plot more interesting and unique. The opening theme is already a favorite of mine though the ending theme is kinda meh. Overall, it's enjoyable and I look forward to what they pull for ARC-V. Down below is the current RAW I watched so take a peek if ya wish. I don't know if I'll continue to do reviews like this but yeah...Just wanted to share my thoughts on this. But until then, you better get your game on because it's time to Duel~!
