FIMFiction Petition (Group Notifications) · 10:40pm Apr 5th, 2014
Hmm. Interesting. So knighty eliminated the group thread notifications from our content feed, because they were taking too much space and slowing down the query for the site, or something like that. I'm not doubting that; that's not the problem I have. The problem I have is the fact that it has been two and a half weeks since this announcement/change was made, and even though knighty said it was "only temporary," he hasn't changed it back or updated us in any way whatsoever.
Now, I've been talking to many people, and I'm getting the vibe that a lot of people are annoyed by this lack of group action. I feel like it was a big part of the site, and that by taking it away, it's taking away half of what most people did on this site. I'm getting the vibe that I'm not alone on this, and it's something that really should be brought to knighty's attention ASAP.
So, what are we planning? Uprising?
Nope.
Revolt?
Nah.
How about a nice, simple petition, simply to keep things . . . simpler.
The petition is on a google doc, and it is right here. You should have comment access to the doc. There is a little summary there, which you can read, followed by instructions on how to sign the doc.
Some of you are probably going to say, "well, he's knighty, he can do whatever the f*** he wants." Well, sorry to break it to you, but as much control as he may have, I'm pretty sure he's not a dictator. He cares about how the site runs, and our opinions, so if a big group of us stand up and say something, he has no choice but to take notice. And besides, he's a human being like the rest of us; he makes mistakes, like everyone else. We just need to point out that it was a mistake that needs to be fixed.
If you sign this petition (or even if you don't), please share it with others, preferably blogging, since that's the only way of mass contact right now. There are many others that would probably want to sign this position that this blog will not reach on its own. So please, do me a favor.
Let me note, I only helped start and set up the system for the petition. So did Elric of MeInipony. Eagle helped us decide exactly what to petiton, and wrote that summary at the beginning, so it is basically his petition.
Please sign and/or share! Thanks!
I think that there should be an option to see group notifications. I mean one master switch, instead of one every group.
Hey, sorry for being a grammar nazi, but in the instructions #2--you typed "copy and pasta". I think you meant "copy and paste", because I have yet to find the pasta somewhere in the document.....just saying.
1984517 Oh, I mean for each individual user.
can't we check group activity by clicking on the group tab..?
1985030
First of all, i believe you mean "copypasta."
Second:
You need to relearn your internet slang, bro.
1985326
Yeah, but I find that annoying. I liked the fact that I could mark as read with the previous system. Personally, I would love it if he could add that same feature to the current Group tab (or like a "Nuke All" or "Delete Read/Unread"). I would be pretty happy with that.
But you know, the fact that he hasn't updated us in 2 and a half weeks about this is a little unsettling. Especially considering that groups are a huge part of this site.
1985637 That's the thing, internet slang always changes. I can learn and relearn all I want. But, with formal, written documents and for others to understand, in general, you leave internet slang out. It doesn't fit the attitude of the paper. Using internet slang in a paper degrades the point your trying to get across.
Hence, the pasta!
1985637 yeah... good point.
1985793
True. But this is not a formal, written document for others to understand.
This is a formal, written document for the internet to understand.
See the difference?
Either way, I get your point.
Come back to the doc, I fixed it.
I'm signing this, but I think you should probably know that there is an entire website dedicated to petitions. Just letting you know because it's way easier than setting up the whole thing on Gdocs.

I know about it, but . . . I don't know, I decided not to use it for this situation. You know, since we use usernames, not real names.
1986520 Oh, okay.
1986427 Sorry bro, didn't mean to sound like a harda. I know how informal the internet can be. I think it has something to do with transitioning between the internet terms and some new college lingo. Back in college writing papers and math competency tests Joy

Go back to the doc and look at the whole thing. I made an edit just for you.
1987351 Haha, I saw it.
Another attempt to influence Knighty by a handful of plucky little bronies that overestimate their importance on this site?

Especially on the internet, when appealing to the uneducated masses who would use that same slang as part of their normal vocabulary (read: autistic fedora-tipping pseudointellectuals who can't even admit they goofed).
1987992
That is stunningly accurate
1986520
Read as: "I didn't know that but I can't admit it or I'll look bad to anonymous internet users".

"Waaaah, the site owner who graciously put up this site for me to use ISNT D0ING WHAT I WANT HIM T0 D0 FAST EN0UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!"
