So Old News, But Oh Well · 10:14am Mar 30th, 2014
On the subject of the ending of Season 3 of the show, in which the Cutie Marks were exchanged and re-acquired.
Cutie Marks are simply physical reminders of a certain pony's natural talent, and what they were gifted with. Sure, they're good at other things as well just like anyone else, but what they excel at is being reminded to them on a day-by-day basis by their own flank. They literally can't forget or avoid their purpose in life.
In the Season 3 Finale, with "What my Cutie Mark is Telling me" scene, they had all been good friends for long enough to know what Cutie Mark did what. In a way, it was the Cutie Mark telling them what they were "supposed" to do, but in a way it was just a psychological trick by years of instinct and culture.
They knew to associate the specific Cutie Mark that they were given with what they had seen their friends excel at. Trying to copy someone else' talents simply by taking their Cutie Mark wouldn't do a thing. The Cutie Mark swap only made them think that their natural role had been switched - or even reversed - and that they had to follow through with it.
So there's my two cents on that old subject.
