Maud Pie: Best Pony? Best Friend? · 11:16am Mar 19th, 2014
Well, is she?
I'm inclined to say yes. Yes she is.
Maud Pie is a very interesting character. Of course she is all about rocks (I love rocks myself) and on the outside appeared to be nothing more than a humorless pony with little to no personality and a strange fondness for all things geologic in nature. And by the end of the episode this stays somewhat true. However new layers are added onto her that rocket this little mare into best pony status.
What is it?
Well it could be this-
Or this -
Or even this -
But I say it's all of this -
What does all those scenes have in common? Good jokes? Nice animation? Yes.
But it also has Pinkie Pie.
In all those scenes Maud is shown to be with Pinkie, going along with any of the activities. She goes and meets all of Pinkie's friends and does her best ,without comprising who she is, to be involved. Even if for a while we believe they can never truly get along, and I doubt we'll be seeing Applejack inviting Maud over for cider making anytime soon, Maud still patiently follows her sister.
She humors her.
Maud understands how important it is to Pinkie Pie for all of them to get along. It's stated throughout the episode by Pinkie and the others multiple times. Yet not by Maud. It's simply implied.
Maud could have said no. Maud could have said "I've had enough", but she tries anyway. Only when all the options to become friends and find common ground seems to have run dry does Maud decide it's best to simply spend her week at the rock farm. But why not just stay with Pinkie and avoid her friends?
Because that would only cause more problems. We all know what it's like to hang out with someone we don't like. It's a terrible feeling.
In the end Maud does find something, one she kind of knew all along, is that she loves her sister and so does her friends (Though they do a terrible job at it. Twilight your an alicorn princess whose can teleport! Rainbowdash your one of the fastest ponies who ever flew! Neither of you could of helped Pinkie a little bit?)
But Maud is just happy to have ponies willing to look out for her sister. She doesn't have to worry about Pinkie being on rocky ground with such great friends keeping her safe (Twilight? Rainbowdash?)
....I think I lost my train of thought.
So maybe my argument wasn't that stone tight, but I'd want someone like that as my friend any day.
Oh wait, I already do.
Hmmm. Okay then.
What was I talking about?
Oh yeah, this -
