Just watched the new episode. Having a chimera in it automatically makes it completely awesome.
But I'd like some explanation: what the hay is up with these ponies living in the swamp? I get the feeling they're some kind of reference or stereotype thingie, but I don't have a clue as to what they're supposed to be... Swamp hillbillies? Is that actually a thing?

Those guys are the Cajun apparently.

is it just me or did one of the swamp-ponies look like Jeffrey Lebowski or "The Dude"?

Basically rednecks who live in the bayou and make some great gumbo! Always armed to the teeth and ready to shoot anyone who tresspasses in their marshy territory.

But, yeah, lots of old redneck stereotyping. It's a real thing though and many tend to fuel those stereotypes even to this day. It's a way of life for many though.
That episode was rather hard to swallow for me, it had a great chimera, which yay it spoke, but boo looks almost like it'll die now from starvation lest the snake head gets cut off. But WOW how often does AJ travel down that path to be so ROUTINE about that stuff? And if THAT was the TOUGHEST what did Big Mac go through? A field of daisies? I LOVE how that was more of a "that time again" sort of attitude for them.
AJ got the more agile fire filled Chimera path, makes me wonder if Big Mac got the heavy climbing Dark Souls Golem Statue boss fights or trolls. :P

Yeah, that's the kind of episode that reminds us that Equestria is actually a terrifying place, where you can end up as a monster's snack if you take the wrong turn... Ponies are so cheerful because every day you don't die is a good day for them!

Yeah, one of my biggest fears of the season 4 opener that basically purified the Everfree Forest, made me wonder if we'd ever see anything like Timber Wolves or encroaching forest stuff ever again. I doubt we'll see anything or much danger at all from Everfree Forest now, maybe, but it's good to see Equestria still has dangers at every turn and ponies are still very much prey to a lot of creatures.
I really loved the world building in that episode, it really saved it for me.
