I'm writing a Vinyl/Octavia fic. I love writing these characters, because I have a very clear idea of what their personalities are like. Sometimes they start playing off of each other to the point where it breaks the tone that I'm trying to convey. This was one such instance; it didn't make the final cut, but I enjoyed writing it.

“That’s very sweet of you, Vinyl.” Once the cork was popped and the libations poured, she raised her glass. “Cheers.”

“Word,” Vinyl answered, the response punctuated by a clink. “What?” She demanded when Octavia raised an eyebrow, “do you not get how dumb ‘cheers’ sounds without a Trottingham accent? When you say it, it sounds like a top hat full of monocles; when I say it, I sound like an idiot!”

Octavia struggled to swallow her gulp of whiskey, fearing that it would be redirected through her nose and ruin everyone’s day. “Vinyl, stop,” she gasped after forcing it down.

“No!” The unicorn cried in mock indignation, knowing she was passing the point of no return, “it’s not fair! Every time you open your mouth, your sultry accent makes every clean-shaven stallion in the room sprout a moustache, and I’m just standing there going ‘Oh yeah, and I’m her fillyfriend, Vinyl Scratch. Most ponies think I’m a dude.’”

Octavia’s head hit the counter as she clutched her ribs. “Vinyl…you’re hurting me…”

“But oh no,” the DJ soldiered on, “you can’t stop at sexing ears and causing spontaneous facial hair. You have to go and be a classy cellist, too. Every time you play, they demand an encore. My encores come nine months later in the form of blame for illegitimate children.”

“V-Vinyl…”

“Your concerts create a new generation of aspiring musicians. My concerts just create a new generation, and most of them don’t know their fathers.”

“Vinyl…” Octavia spluttered through her fitful laughter, “that’s…absolutely awful.”
