I suggest you see both Frozen and The Desolation of Smaug. Allow me to present my case. · 10:26pm Jan 12th, 2014
For the Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
1. Excellent dragon
This Smaug is the Smaug we've been waiting for. He's immediately identifiable as a dragon, modeled after European traditional dragons. He breathes a great torrent of flame. He's calculatingly arrogant, thrives on praise and can get flustered. He is all that you want in an antagonistic dragon character.
2. Tauriel and Kili
Without spoiling this too much, Kili and Tauriel come from radically different sides of Middle-Earth. But love finds its path, my friends.
3. Less cartoon-y.
Now when I saw the first film, it was while I was up in Alaska. And I thought to myself; "This gets a bit cartoon-y." Especially the fight scene with trolls and later the goblins. You feel like your watching The Hobbit cartoon from 1977 as opposed to a modern live-action adaptation. Maybe it was just me. But this film subverts all of that. Sure, it has comedic bits, but it doesn't seem to get in the realm of a cartoon. It gets violent and as epic-tier good vs evil as one would want from a Hobbit film.
And now, for Frozen:
1. The songs
From 'Frozen Heart' above to 'Let It Go', this movie has song talents that are right up there with The Lion King and The Little Mermaid and other such vintage Disney films. I swear, these songs are emotional, there were points in film were I was happy, then near immediately sad from just the songs.
2. Good characters
From Elsa the Queen of Arendelle to Kristoff and Sven, this movie has excellent characters. You've got a wealth of awesome exchanges, puns, insights and did I mention the SONGS!?
3. An ending I don't think anyone who saw the trailers saw coming
The trailers seemed to suggest through Anna's tagline "That's no blizzard. that's my sister!" and through that, I and others I knew inferred that Elsa was the villain. As it stands, she's not, the movie has a good message and I'm out of explanations since I don't want to spoil it for anyone.
And with that blog done, I return to writing!

I agree, but Legolas kind of has to get out from under the shadow of his megalomaniac father.

I hear you, but did you see his eyes spark up at the thought of gems? (*cough*Silmarils*cough-cough*) Also, in the first movie we see him on his great Megaloceros and his armed forces and then they just turn around and go home.
