Are Alicorns Really Immortal and Godly? I Think Not... · 5:56am Jan 10th, 2014

For a while now, I've been coming across fic after fic about how immortal and powerful alicorns are.... "Goddesses this, Goddesses that," I mean, come on, really? This is too much. I know it's fanficiton and all, but it's getting excessive. I can't tell you how many times I've come across these types of fics. I mean no disrespect to any author, but I can't take it anymore. I had enough.

Firstly, there is no evidence that they are immortal. However, there IS evidence that they are extremely long lived, especially in the case of Luna and Celestia, but it has never been stated in the show nor has it ever been stated by the writers that they are immortal. I'm pretty sure the writers have actually stated that Twilight has a normal life-span, and I'm sure Cadence is in the same vote as Twilight. I find it really off-putting that many fanfic writers do this.

I've read some great fanfics with cool concepts, but as soon as I read the "immortal" or "godly" part, I don't find the story appealing anymore. If you want to include it in your story, fine, but I want to see how they became immortal rather than being "just immortal." This particular concept could have easily been left out and still have an effective story; I don't know why many authors actually state that they are immortal.

Secondly, they are not goddesses by any means. They were never shown to be that powerful - powerful by unicorn standards? Yes, but that's just it. I'm pretty sure any sufficiently powerful unicorn (or a group of unicorns) could move the sun and moon. At best, Celestia is capable of destroying a pretty good sized building if she spams her magical blasts, same thing with Luna. They aren't capable of destroying cities, and they can't grant otherworldly powers, or anything similar to that, because of the simple fact that they have never been shown these capabilities. You need feats, not speculative theories. If you want to make them goddesses, fine, but please, don't just say that they are god-like beings without a background story to back it up.

To add to my case, they wouldn't have to rely on the Elements of Harmony to solve their conflicts. I would also like to add that Celestia was handily defeated by an amplified Queen Chrysalis, it goes to show that they aren't all that powerful to begin with. The only being that is closest to being a god is Discord, but even he has his limits. If anything, I would categorize Luna, Celestia, and Discord as demigods (especially Discord), because it makes better sense that way.

To summarize - the fandom overrates alicorns as godly creatures, while their feats says otherwise. I'm not going to force anyone to change their opinions, but I want people, especially the authors of fanfics, to think.

If anyone reads this, please, share your opinion.

I'd have to agree with you, although I can go along with them being written as godly/immortal if the context has given them enough flaws in return.

Maybe they're more like Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where he was immortal until one gigantic blow from Thor's hammer. It sounds ridiculous out of context but it could be translatable to Chrysalis defeating Celestia in the S2 Finale.

Hey, Jon. How are you?

Well, I'm okay with them being immortal and godly (in canon), but from what I've seen in the show, they simply aren't. I like to see evidence that they are immortal and godly, not just "being immortal" or "being godly," even in fics.

Hell, I could argue that any sufficiently powerful army could wipe Equestria off the map, and there's no doubt that it could be wiped out off the map. I'm just really tired of seeing the fandom overrate Celestia, Luna, and to some extent, Twilight and Cadence.

1708263 I'm doing well, Gin. Yourself?

I get what you mean. You shouldn't just establish something so important and largely-effecting without giving some backing to it.

And yes, I have seen the same things as you with the overrating. In general, I wouldn't care so much for the subject if not for the hype. (like overrated movies, games, etc.)

I'm okay, I suppose.

It's really unnecessary, if you ask me. For example, look at the fic "Winona Commits Seppuku," and read that last part with Luna and Celestia - that could've easily been left out.

Like I said, I rather have evidence before judging anything.
