Are Alicorns Really Immortal and Godly? I Think Not... Part 2 · 9:17pm Jan 22nd, 2014

This is Part 2 of my blog.

In my other blog, I don't think I was fair with the notion that they are not immortal. In a sense, the question of weather they are immortal or not is unimportant; for all purposes, they are just there to help move along the plot line as supporting/secondary characters. With that said, the fandom does overrate alicorns while the evidence is contrary to those beliefs. We have to also remember that things like gods, goddesses, kings, queens, (to an extent) immortality, etc are only titles and labels. But how does this apply in a fictional setting, and more importantly, how dies it apply to Luna and Celestia?

I'll answer that question with another question - does labeling a character by anything unofficial make them so? In the case of immortality, what we do know is that Luna, Celestia, and Discord have lived for 1,000 years (which I can argue is inconsistent), but does that automatically label them as immortal? I'm going to go further to explain on how immortality is defined:

Immortality is the ability to live without the side effect of dying - there are different types of immortality throughout various fictions and I'm not going write every single one of them, just the most commonly seen.

1) Complete Immortality - This means you can't die, period. These types of characters can survive the vacuum of space, nuclear explosions, and any uninhabitable environment without food and water.

2) The Ageless - Characters of this type can't die via age, but everything else applies normally.

3) Spare Body Immortality - Characters of this type use methods of cloning spare bodies, switching bodies, or non-physical methods of extending their lifespan.

4) Induced Immortality - These type of characters where given immortality.

5) Incomplete Immortality - Characters of this type are limited to aging, but they can't die, and this includes zombies.

If Celestia and Luna are immortal, they would be ageless while still be vulnerable to dying by other means. If that was the case, then where were they during Hearths Warming Eve? Which means they hadn't always existed. If they had to come from somewhere, they had to be birthed by pretty powerful beings, but I don't think that's the case. I think they were given alicorn status by Star Swirl by completing some task - they only exist because of plot device.

Well, it is what it is. Some beings from comics are immortal and can never die. I'm just stating what I observed from the show and comparing with other fictional characters with immortality.
