Review: Rarity Takes Manehattan · 8:01am Jan 5th, 2014
I have decided to start writing episode reviews for season four, starting with episode 8 (Rarity Takes Manehattan). The reviews won't be very long, and I will usually have watched the episode within half an hour or so of writing. So, just an alert you'll see on every review:
Spoiler Alert: If you have not yet watched the latest episode of MLP, I suggest you watch the episode before reading this (unless you're like me, and like spoilers)
So, first off, I'd like to mention that I watched the episode here (see below) and was unable to catch everything the cast said as MrAwkwardReview was a little loud at times. So I will be updating this review later, when better, HQ versions of the episode are released.
Anyway… lets start with the opening.
Poor Spike. He is always seen doing Rarity's dirty work. So, we learn that Rarity is going to Manehattan (not like we don't already that) and that the rest of the Mane Six are coming with her. Rarity shows her first act of generosity of the episode-- showing her friends the tickets she managed get to "The hottest musical on Brildleway!" (so punny) After the humorous opening, we see the theme song. Oh, and am I the only one who noticed Discord in the new season 4 theme song?? (he's in the window of Fluttershy's cottage) Whoa that image was a lot bigger than I thought it would be.
And onto… the… next scene!
We see Manehattan for the first time since, what, the Cutie Mark Chronicles? We are hit with, idk, the Baylyn Bridge and the Empire Stallion Building? Rarity starts singing the new song, Generosity, which, by the way, I loved. I couldn't hear the lyrics so well because of someone's blabbing, but I could tell it was about Rarity's element, generosity. The song takes us all throughout Manehattan and we see her letting other pony's go in front of her, giving a bellhop extra gems, fixing a broken wheel on a taxi, and many other generous things. Nice song, nice people-er, ponies.
It's starts to rain, Rarity must get to the Fashion Week runway in ten minutes, all the other ponies need to catch a cab, but the cab driver, puller, was grateful for her fixing the taxi wheel and gives here a lift. Unfortunately, Rar' was in such a rush that she forgot her dresses. The same bellhop seen before (I think, or was it the "driver"?) got the dresses to her on time, though. Rarity briefly got chewed out by Prim Hemline, the host of the Fashion Week event. After Prim leaves, Rarity meets an old friend, Suri Polomare, from the Ponyville Knitters League. They apparently haven't seen each other in years, and as Suri helps Rarity move her dresses backstage, she notices the remarkable fabric. When she asks for some and Rarity gives it to her, I had no doubt that this was the pony that was mentioned in the spoilers on the MLP wikia. It said that some pony would steal Rarity's designs. After seeing how awful Suri really was, I ended up hating her. Oh well, to bad for her. Anyway, I could also tell that some time towards the end of the episode, poor Coco Pommel would either stand up to Suri, or help Rarity.
Blah blah blah, jam-packed day, mane six having fun, Rarity running in in tears. Mane six helps Rarity with new designs, and Rar' gets mad at everyone for not seeming to care about her predicament. In the morning, Rarity runs off to the fashion show and doesn't even bother to thank her friends. I didn't really like that scene.
Rar' arrives at the show, Suri acts like a bitch again, Rar' sees that she may have won the competition, but realizes that her friends aren't there and worries that her horrible behavior the day before had driven them back to Ponyville. Another song is heard as Rar' goes into sad setting, and we see her wet hairstyle also seen in Sisterhooves Social and Magical Mystery Cure. I have seen dozens of pictures with other ponies with that hairstyle, but only Rar' can make it look good.
Anyway, Rar' rushes to see Prim so she can tell her that she must return to Ponyville. Suri and (*sigh*) Coco tell her that she should steer clear of Prim, as she is furious, and that Rar' lost. The mane six enter and tell Rar' that they slept late, and didn't leave her. The mane six see Hinny of the Hills and Coco confronts them and tells her that she quit working for Suri and that Rar' really did win. Yay!
Lesson: "While there are ponies who will take advantage of your generosity, you should never, ever let that cause you to abandon your generous spirit. Nothing feels worse than taking advantage of the giving nature of your friends."
Now to the grade. =Meh =so sad! = Yeah! loved it! = *gag* hated it =What the f*ck just happened? =So funny =so relatable =unknown grade to be given =not bad!

Overall Grade: I loved the concept of generosity, which we haven't seen out of Rarity very much. Good song, nice setting, good lesson, but I hated the villain.
Let me know what you thought of this and any suggestions for other reviews!
