I have been watching the new season of MLP and I love it.
I love the FlutterDashery going on.
(regardless if you see it or not it's there)
I love how Spike has devolved from a side character to a walking joke and mostly being ignored
(take that Spike fanboys)
I also love how they killed off Sparity, and Rarishy potential which means more FlutterDashing
Though I will admit the latest episode made me had mixed emotions.
While the intro was FlutterDash all the way the second part of the episode was DaringDashing... I wanted Fluttershy to step in and grab her lover XD.

So it's good that Spike takes up the running gag role that Pinkie Pie already has, therefore making both of those characters step all over each other? I preferred Spike's old niche as the idiot genius, the character with no brains who still manages to be the voice of reason most of the time. Now he's just the idiot. That was Pinkie's job. It also takes the only romantic subplot out of the show (Sparity sucks, but it's better than nothing) and makes the show a little more one-dimensional in gender. It makes for a fantasy realm with barely any species variation, kind of like in the original star trek where the most alien main character had pointed ears and that was it. I'm not saying that Spike is an essential character, but that he's always been that one character who had something different to offer.
1590970 Sorry I can't agree with this comment. Spike was never the idiot genius. He was just an idiot. The only people who saw him as a voice of reason were those who lacked it. His character did nothing but bring annoyance to the show.
With him barely there and made into the buffoon he is I am now able to thoroughly enjoy MLP without having to deal with an underaged wingless dragon trying to soak up the spotlight.
He was made as a comic relief character while Pinkie was made to be the silly one. Pinkie was never an idiot just random and eccentric.
Also there wasn't any subplot of romance with Rarity and Spike and never will be. It was always Spike being infatuated with someone above his tier and never would it have been anything more than that.

I don't see you hating on the rest of the mane 6 for those same reasons. I think the reason people don't like Spike is because he has a lot of flaws that hit a bit close-to-home for a brony. Lack of maturity, general snarkiness, annoyingness to people outside our community, lots of things I see prevalent in people here. It works on the same principle as people liking Rainbow Dash, Twilight, or Pinkie. We see in them how we like to see ourselves: Awesome, smart, and funny. People are less likely to like a character who regularly exhibits their flaws, but personally, I think that's no way to judge a character.
1594393 It really isn't his flaws that make me angry with him. It's his lack of appeal. He isn't cute, funny, charming, strong, Etc. He is nothing more than a comic relief that the writers tried giving some kind of relevance to. If he was just flawed like the rest of the ponies but given some kind of redeeming quality than I could enjoy him as a character.
He was the reason Pinkie went insane in Party of One
He almost got Rarity killed in Secret of my Excess.
He couldn't protect Rarity from the Diamond Dogs.
He only saved the Crystal Empire by being there. ( if you remember Rainbow Dash was going to go with Twilight and with her assistance the Kingdom would have been saved faster)
There is just nothing for anyone to like about Spike.
The only thing he has going for him is his eternal underdog status. Nothing else.

Sorry. not sure if it really matters now, but I have to respectfully disagree with your statement. If you don't like the character, that's fine. Just say you don't, but literally saying he has no redeemable qualities whatsoever is not only bold, but all in all false. Yes he has his share of writers that are hit and miss with him, but those writers do the same with other characters. Thankfully he was written well at the end of this season.
How is it Spike's fault that Pinkie forgot her own birthday? She went insane on her own accord for even thinking that her friends would do her wrong. She even asked Spike to say it! And Pinkie is one of my favorite characters.
Rarity almost got herself and three others killed in Sonic Rainboom when she was supposed to help her friend. Fluttershy destroyed the town by keeping a single parasprite when she was supposed to get rid of it. Twilight had the townspeople in chaos when she was so deadbent on getting a report. Heck they left their friends behind in the desert. I find it one sided that you're singling out his blunders only. The Mane 6 aren't perfect and don't represent their elements 100% of the time.
He was a small dragon that was against 3 larger opponents. He fought to the best of his ability and got his friends for help when he loss. What did you want him to do?
Yes, he was there by his own accord. He disobeyed the order that Twilight wanted him to stay. You really gonna knock on his loyalty for a friend? Man I guess I should hate Samwise Gangee from Lord of the Rings too.
I can literally tell you what I like about him. But like I said, if you don't like him, that's fine, it kinda seems like you don't. I don't know.
Just have to say that people like Spike, just as much as you like your own share of characters.
