    Why we read fanfiction

I just read Appletheosis by DuncanR, a story which doesn't have nearly as much love as it deserves, and it got me thinking. Why have I spend such an inappropriate amount of time reading silly horse words at the detriment to all my other hobbies? I play fewer games, read fewer books, and watch fewer shows. I've even gained an

    Sympathy cards are crap

There are a lot of depressing things in the world. There are a lot of depressing things in the world. One of them is to watch as someone pulls at their hair and furiously flips through sympathy cards at the grocery store for half an hour desperately trying to find the words on paper they can't find in themselves. Another depressing thing is when that's you. (Don't worry nobody died) You dig and you dig but its hard to find anything that isn't just insulting. Because its not okay. And no god was there protecting anybody. Its even harder to find something that will actually help. Something that actually means something. Seriously Hallmark, step up your game.

People walk by you with barely a glance and a busy housewife shoves passed you, nearly knocking you over with her cart, and yells an insincere sorry. She doesn't even look at you. Maybe I've watched to many romantic comedies but I kept expecting the girl at the check out aisle to come over and help me look and there would be some sort of romantic moment. Or whatever. She knows what I was looking for, its not like she was getting any customers, and she kept giving me the occasional glance. But she didn't of course. I mean who would? When tragedies strike the world just moves on by even when yours stops. People just don't have enough time or sympathy to give it away to strangers.

Eventually you find the card. While you read it you fly rapidly through anticipation, elation, and then relief. Until of course at that last line where some tacky cliche is used and your relief becomes tainted with disappointment. But hey, nothings perfect and eventually we all settle for something that's good enough. Well I settled for a card that had everything I wanted them to hear and that's all I really needed.

I'm not entirely sure why I'm posting this here. I guess its that first paragraph. That line was ringing in my head like a the reverb of a microphone while I was in that aisle listening to cheerful Christmas music. Its not exactly anything you can say to someone whose really hurting.

Anyway I'm sorry for tugging on your heartstrings and thank you for reading my rant. I'm sorry I can't go into detail but its not my story to tell. But nobodies to hurt and I'm doing fine. Its something that just happened to a past roommate but they're already out of the hospital and will make a full recovery. I'm not so sure they will emotion wise but they've got people who care about them and that's the best we can hope for.
