SPOILERS Review to the Oneshot: "Twilight Loses Her Quill" by Sneaky · 5:47am Nov 1st, 2013
As with an uncountable amount of people, I am a schmuck when it comes to well written comedy. You ever go onto Youtube when you are all stressed out over something and just watch videos of your favorite comedy or stand-up and just feel all that tension in your brain just melt away with a few very good laughs? Well, I have to say that this one-shot is like one of those little clips that you find on The Vine of people doing stupid things, but this time, what goes on in this story is quite relatable and very much believable compared to a guy sitting on a car with his arms and legs in cones with the song "I will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston. (Yes, I went there). Let me explain why this is a very well done short story that everyone needs to read.
What became very apparent from the beginning was how the comedy was going to come out, besides the title of course. It starts out by saying
Twilight was in the zone.
The zone.
putting emphasis on things that mostly wouldn't be funny and making them so through narration in a way that we could believe Twilight would use going through her head as the reader reads it. By starting with this and never stopping till the end, you are instantly hooked. We are never even explained what Twilight was working on, but that is besides the point because Twilight has a canon history of going bonkers over something so small. We, as readers, are just sitting there and waiting for the moment when it strikes and we get our lovable crazy Twilight once again.
As the story goes, Twilight is working on some paperwork and is so focused on it that she doesn't notice how much coffee that she has been drinking all day until nature calls her. Once again, this is believable because when Twilight gets her focus on something, it usually takes a lot to get her out of it. She even takes a few moments to check and see how much time she took to go to the bathroom. This attention to detail of a character is mostly what makes this story so great and what makes the funny moments so easy to digest and enjoy.
Back at her desk, Twilight sees that her quill has gone missing and she has no spares. She begins to instantly think up of reasons as to what happened to it, much like someone does when they hear a creepy noise at night in the woods. The downside to this is that Twilight is a major pessimist when it comes to her work going wrong and she instantly thinks of the worst possible things that could happen if she goes to get a new supply of quills.
Suddenly, Spike walks in with a box of quills and invokes the wrath of a panicking Twilight. And by the end of it all, Twilight discovers that the quill was under the piece of paper that she was working on before she went to the bathroom. This is a comedy gold moment because it is so subtle after taking her aggression out on her brain and Spike, it was so believable because I've done something like this, and by bringing up this thought, we could instantly see the humor that Twilight, and ultimately ourselves though probably more down played, had gone through to only find a stupid moment.
The only real criticism that i could find of it only comes from a personal one and that Twilight is much too downplayed as there was so much potential for more craziness. But what is there is enough for an enjoyable story.
Thanks for this!
