    It's New Year's!

    Wooooo!

Holy crap they actually dropped an Indy Car here! :pinkiegasp:

Granted, it dropped neither far, nor fast, and it didn't light up at the bottom of the drop, but hey, we actually did something! :pinkiehappy:

Never read a Bad Horse story before going to bed and/or going to work. Or really, before doing anything that will result in long stretches of time where you have nothing to do but think.

NOTE:
Just to be clear, this is a result of finishing Pony Play.
Pony Play is a marvelous story. I highly recommend it. I really, truly do. I do not regret reading it. Not even a bit.

But damn it is a punch in the gut. :applejackunsure:

Mind giving a synopsis? I gave it a pass based on the tags and categories; the description was interesting, but not quite enough to get me over my aversion to romance and sex stories.

I pre-read it, for my sins[1], and I can offer this: there's really no explicit sex in it[2], and hardly any romance. What it is, is a story of profound psychological dysfunction and a sort of storification of that old saw: He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man. Only suitably adapted to the context, of course.

It's expertly written[3], but may give you nightmares and cause acute distress. I don't know how it's tagged[4] but what it is, is a horror story, with a tenor combining the Cronenbergian[5], the Gigeresque[6], and the Ligotiish[7] in small but, I think, significant amounts.

That's just my take, however. Do note that, apparently, Bad Horse is exceptionally good at pushing my buttons, sometimes without meaning to. One of his stories damn near gave me PTSD.

[1] Which I can't quite recall, but must have been fairly colorful to warrant this.
[2] Or I wouldn't have read it.
[3] Which is just another way of saying "Bad Horse wrote it."
[4] I've 'View Mature' off, you see.
[5] Inasmuch as it provokes an acute discomfort with the corporeal.
[6] Inasmuch as it wield sexuality in order to more efficiently give you nightmares.
[7] Inasmuch (I need to stop using that word) it uses a profoundly pessimistic and almost misanthropic atmosphere to enhance the sense of philosophical revulsion that is, ahem, handmaiden to horror in this particular iteration of it.

Well, now I am curious, which one nearly gave you PTSD? :rainbowderp:

Heh, Pony Play angered me. I wrote off the main character as being incredibly lazy at the end. I hate lazy young people and see it all the time at work. Eheh, I might have been reading the story at work while I was on break, too, so I guess that didn't help matters at all.

I don't think that was even close to the intention of the story, but this is a Bad Horse story. It's like he wants you to feel something, anything really, but he wants that feeling amplified to an extreme degree.

And you should tell him about it. He greatly appreciates it.

While Pretty Pony Princesses is far from his being popular, it left a massive impression on me. I was scared and paranoid for almost 3 weeks after the fact.

I couldn't really function well. I was lethargic. I became really jumpy, especially when someone approached me from behind. I screwed up on paperwork. I became even shyer than I already am. And the nightmares I had of dying became frequent again. I lost confidence in my own abilities... it sucked. Eventually I guess those feelings and behaviours faded a bit and here I am, talking on a Bad Horse fan's journal. Hello.

Well, when I talked about it with BH, he gave me something that was close to an apology. I guess that helped.

The story was like the perfect key to a door in my head, the teeth sliding in easily and unlocking it. I think it was because the story as a whole is ambiguous. It let my mind drift into interpretation and those ideas of mental illnesses, mental hospitals, religion (in the comments), and self denial of truth were enough to force me dredge up some very painful memories. It led to a relatability that was open enough to be molded and become even more relatable.

The relatability is what did me in.

The work is very unpolished and I guess that would factor in to people disliking it. Apparently the key to open that door in my head is a rusty grungy one, despite its newness. How appropriate.

Despite that, I would possibly go through all that crap again for the experience.

I like BH stories because they end up giving me a massive emotional high. It's almost like a drug. I like it. Well, except for Pretty Pony Princesses. It's more of appreciation than liking.

I think Bad Horse enjoys the reaction he gets from his audience. Except when it's a serious negative reaction that affects them in RL. Maybe.

There really should be a Bad Horse Anonymous group to help deal with this kind of crap :/ BH would be greatly amused by such a thing.

Oh believe me, he knows. I tend to leave larger than average comments on the stories I have read of his. He Knows. I think that may be my mistake.
