I found this story a few days ago, and it's by an author who needs some help.
No, not me!
But if you like star Trek, this one appears to be doing alright with merging ponies into that world, simply having them be a race that has finally joined the Federation by gaining Warp Technology. Albeit from downed Federation shuttles that had been abandoned, but oh well.
The chapter is a bit on the short side, and it only has one so far, but it looks like it has some potential.

I am subscribed to over two hundred unfinished stories, and I still got less than six chapters a week for several months.

Try the borders of the Macintosh Mountain range, they make their nekropoli (much more menacing name than they cities themselves) beneath them. The crystal caverns beneath Canterlot are actually the remains of a batpony colony that was abandoned.
At least, according to the lore of the Dawnwatch Nekropolus. I make it a habit to wander much, so I've seen much of the world, and almost all of the continent.
Changeling cocoons are surprisingly comfy, once they've had time to set and be stretched as hammocks.

When you have my wife's sister, Daring, riding your flanks for snagging the trophy from the overly-complex deathtrap first, you know you've been exploring a ton. It's not my fault half the 'deadly trap-filled dungeon' stories come from me...

You're only bad at it because you don't have the right mindset. Simply make a character that is you. Then, react to the situation. Don't forget verbal, physical,and mental reactions to the situation.
That's how I write, actually.
