    F*cking Bethesda

Was in a good mood today, for once. A real good mood--that's not usual for me, I'm normally pissed right the fuck off at one thing or another.

    Ponified Terms

Okay, so I know I'm not exactly a big writer here on FIMFic, so I highly doubt anyone will even read this blog, but I feel the need to make this issue known irregardless of whether or not it's actually made known.

Ponified Terms · 4:51am Apr 6th, 2012

Okay, so I know I'm not exactly a big writer here on FIMFic, so I highly doubt anyone will even read this blog, but I feel the need to make this issue known irregardless of whether or not it's actually made known.

Marefriend. WHY? Who is the shmuck who came up with this term? He should receive as many hoofs to the face as he can handle while retaining half his teeth! It's horrible! Look at the parallels:

Filly is to Girl
As
Mare is to Woman.

So every time you use the term 'Marefriend' in a story, you're saying Womanfriend. Which is horrible. And then there's the double standard--the male version of the term is coltfriend. Boyfriend, by comparison.

Boyfriend and Womanfriend. Again I ask: WHY?

Bronies, the correct term is FILLYFRIEND. Make things even, please--unless you want to go calling the male half of a relationship stallionfriend, which is even worse than womanfriend?

Yeah, I didn't think so.

At first I was too astonished that someone had posted on my blog to notice what you actually said.

Then I realized that someone had posted on my blog to troll me. :ajbemused:

That may be trolling, but I'm not a troll. :pinkiehappy:

Please don't report me or anything! :applecry::scootangel:

... You can report people for trolling? That's so wrong. :pinkiegasp: Considering the fandom originated from the first pioneering /b/ronies, one would think we'd be somewhat accepting of mild paraspriteism.

How about using the term 'mare-friend' in place of 'lady-friend'?

That would be better, yes. I just don't like seeing marefriend used to describe a female with whom you are in a relationship.

Interesting point, and very valid. I'd never considered the parallels before.

I believe it might be that the term originated from either Fallout: Equestria or Progress. At least, that's the oldest material that I can remember seeing the term in.

Regarding the use of the terms, however...I believe in this case it might be a matter of style. Technically, yes, fillyfriend is correct. But marefriend didn't just pop out of nowhere. It's shorter by one syllable, for one thing, and that can make a lot of difference in constructing fluid sentences. Also, bear in mind that the term "filly" is also generally used to refer to young ponies, such as the CMC. I know that the same could be said for coltfriend, but in my mind at least the connection is much weaker.

All in all, neither term is wrong, per se. It's not really justifiable to directly superimpose human concepts on top of ponies. Who knows what a race of colourful ponies might actually use as terms to refer to one another? I believe the end decision should be left to the individual author as a matter of aesthetic choice.
