What do I brand myself as? · 5:48am Jul 25th, 2013

It has occurred to me from a brief discussion I had about the term "brony" and "fan" and how it reflects on me. Do I call myself a brony? Am I a fan of the show?

I'd like to think there is definitely a difference between liking a show, and being a fan of it. When I first was introduced to the show and the fandom, I thought it was fantastic. I couldn't get enough of it, spending a whole day watching every single episode from the season's pass that I had not seen since I begun following it.

But now... I don't know. I've never told anyone IRL about my like for the show and the fandom, even when that rare subject of bronies is brought up, and I never feel the need to bring up bronies or anything pony related in any subject that describes myself (like site biographies). When I used to read and write fan-fiction, I now only use this site as social media (much akin to Facebook or Twitter) and to help manage groups. I don't look at pony art, nor do I watch any AMVs or listen to pony music. Even when I talk with other bronies, I avoid saying anything MLP related.

We have to remember that "fan" is derived from the word "fanatic," and I'm not sure if that really describes me. I've fallen out of touch with the fandom and the show, becoming more and more disinterested. Where does that leave me though? Do I consider myself a member of the brony community? Or simply a silent shadow behind it?

Where does that leave me though?

It leaves you with memories of having a good time. Whether or not you move on, those good times are not easily forgotten.

Do I consider myself a member of the brony community?

You know when you use a fireplace and, long after the fire has gone out, embers still burn in the remains? That's what I think is happening; your interest in the show awaits a rekindling of that fire. It might or might not ever happen. However, it matters not because of the good memories from the past. TLDR: You're a fan (maybe/maybe not a brony) with only embers radiating enough heat to perchance start a new flame.

Or simply a silent shadow behind it?

Yes, but only for now as it could change. But I like my description better. :pinkiehappy:

If you move on, then you simply move on. There's no shame in it. Just keep in mind all the good memories for they will show you what the show truly meant in your eyes.
