Equestria Girls Review · 4:14am Jul 18th, 2013
So, about a month ago, Equestria Girls came out. Unfrotunately, I was not able to see it in theaters because I was out of town and the nearest theater was an hour away.
But, I did see it, but I never really got a chance for a review.
So, here we go;
This movie was not bad. The songs were really good, and not as "in-your-face" as Magical Mystery Cure. "Help Twilight Win the Crown" was by far one of my favorite songs from the show.
However, the plot was a bit cliché and reminded me of a Disney Channel Movie. Unpopular girl out-populars mean popular girl, and gets the mean popular girl's ex-boyfriend to fall in love with her. I mean, who wasn't screaming when we were told that Flash was Sunset Shimmer's ex?
I did, however, like how the Mane 6 had a torn friendship, but I wished that conflict could have lasted longer.
Speaking of conflicts that should have lasted longer, the ending was awful, in my opinion! I mean, all the sudden we have a (fire breathing?) demon with zombie slaves, and then, nope, elements of harmony. Usually, the Elements have a HUGE conflict to over come to defeat the main villain. In "Canterlot Wedding," the ponies were captured, and in "The Return of Harmony," they didn't work. But here, even with only the crown, they just worked, and Sunset Shimmer Demon Form didn't even put up a good fight. We just immeaditly destroyed a potentially good villian!
I also could've done without the cheesy reintroducing of the elements.
The crown being the only element also shows another problem I had in this movie that appeared in Season 3; The "Mane 6" are becoming "Twilight Sparkle and the Elements of Harmony."
Those of us who know rock bands, we know that the next step from here is we drop The Elements of Harmony.
The point that I'm making is that Twilight's importance has made the other five less important. Instead of each pony needed skill-wise to overcome something, the other five have become more of a cheering squad and a "second-string" back up for Twilight. It really annoys how most of the fight scenes or conflict-resolving scenes in general no longer feature Rainbow Dash and Applejack fighting, a Rairty and Fluttershy diversion, Pinkie being Pinkie and Twilight strategizing. Instead, Twilight does most of the work, and the other elements are just kinda there so the Elements of Harmony actually work.
For those of you who have read "All I Ever Wanted," this is kinda where Rainbow Dash's rant about Twilight leaving them comes from, since it is apparent in Mystery Cure and now EG.
So, all in all, this movie was a good effort and had many good conflicts and ideas presented, but it seems that they were followed through poorly. The movie seemed rushed because of this.
Bonus points for references in the movie, like the CMC's youtube video and Derpy being spotted.
7/10. Should be a 6 or 6.5, but Derpy returned, and I laughed at a few of the show's references.
twilight was essentially just singing about "i'm a princess and your not, bitch"
