End of Episode 1! · 7:01am Nov 27th, 2011
The pilot episode's over! So... now what?
Well, first I'd like to apologize for the last blog post. I re-read that just recently and realized how much of an ingrate I am. Even if I only received one comment I should be thankful. That anyone is reading my stories at all is amazing! I've never released stuff I've worked on before, so I guess with my high expectations I hoped for a lot of "this isn't working" or "I like this character"... but after noting how not much happens in the "honeymoon"-like first chapters, I realize that there's not a whole lot to say. To those who have said anything or simply voiced your approval/disapproval with a star rating, thank you so so so much. Even if you were a cactus I'd hug you.
...
With that said, STORY STUFF! So, I've been feeling kinda down lately... I haven't written a new chapter in a week. Luckily, I'm far ahead as is. I guess my main worry right now is if readers are going to like the transition I'm heading into. You know how this story has a "slice of life" tag on it? That's because the following episodes are going to be very "slice of life"-ish. These are students at a school with pony problems. You will get drama, adventures, the whole shebang, and it will be shown in episodes (three chapters) just like on MLP! And this is all about to start with none other than... Starlight Hooves! Yep, he gets the spotlight next.
Wait, did you think this whole story was going to be centered around Twilight? Oops! She is central and shows up often, but if I only focused on her character then I wouldn't have called this story "Tales of the Winter Magic Academy"! In a sense, this is like an anthology. But at the same time, it's a complete, sequential plot. It's hard to explain; so, think of it as a series of arches creating one large arch that is the overall storyline. It'll be like a relay race, with the nine Ponyville peeps passing the baton on through the entire story. We'll still be seeing big adventures, tons of fun... wait.
Well, hopefully you get my point!
An anthology-type sequential story involving different "main" characters advancing one overarching plot? Are you trying to kill me from awesome? Seriously though, this fandom is a bit lacking in that type of storytelling, so I really look forwards to what you'll come up with. I really liked the pilot episode, and your characterization of the background ponies is pretty cool, though I'm not sure Twilight would flip out about test scores that easily.
Anyhow, keep up the good work!

A little over a month ago I myself couldn't have explained what I was building as well as you managed to summarize in that one sentence. Yar. I do like trying things that aren't very commonly done, so hopefully I execute this set-up well. Glad you liked the pilot!
(Wait, you don't think Twilight would flip out that easily!? Just kidding, you're absolutely correct. Mainly, I was leaning on the idea that after traveling so much and being in the middle of a life transition, Twi was tired and on her "last straw". Plus, crazy Twilight made things funny and got things moving. )
Thanks for your feedback and encouragement! I think I'm back in the writing mood now...
