Magik is the energy of which the Equestrian planet and/or universe thrives upon. It permeates all that can be seen and is the basis behind all forms of existence, living or otherwise. The Everfree is the only place shown where magik is not in play in the greater scheme of things but is otherwise a "null zone".
Magik has been shown in show and discussed via the creators to some extent but is left otherwise to fan speculation. what we know out right is this.
Earth ponies: The magik that permeates this creature causes the fields and crops upon which their till to grow faster and fuller. When in non-agriculture based situations their natural magik causes them to be of sturdier frame and physique.
Pegasi: The magik that permeates this creature allows for them to interact with their natural surroundings as far as meteorological standings go. They are able to interact with air particles to creates clouds, saturates said clouds with water, and statically charge these clouds to create thunderheads.
Unicorn: The magik that permeates this creature is the most prominent of the three Equine races. Unlike the first two where the magical properties are shared throughout the race the properties found in the unicorn is tied solely to their Cutie mark as a form of specialization. It has been shown however that there are low level spells that any and all unicorn can learn. From this we have learned however that there is a physical manifestation of the magik being done in the form of a glow, unique in color to the unicorn, on their horn and the object or spell they are interacting with.
This leads to the thought of three separate forms of magik in of Energy manipulation for the pegasi, Spatial manipulation for the earth ponies, and Corporeal/Ethereal conjuration for unicorns.
