Fanfic Review: My Little Heartbreak: Heartbroken · 1:23pm May 23rd, 2013

Heartbreak is a series of fics following the (mis)adventures of Anthony AKA Heartbreak and while this review will focus on the first fic in the series, much of the positive/negative aspects do carry over to the other fics.
Heartbreak is about a human man (yes, it's a HiE style of fic) who has pissed of many girls (and one guy) in his romantic life...so much so that they decide to banish him from the realm alltogheter and to the magical land of ponies. In the process of said banishment, they transform his body into that of a Earth Pony Mare, forces him to forget his own name, gives him a speech impairment and makes everyone in the normal world forget that he ever existed. Oh and he is also given the insulting and (by himself) much hated name "Heartbreak".
Believe it or not...this is a comedy :D
Heartbreak (in typical HiE fashion) crashes straight through Twilights roof, and "befriends" the mane6. Read pisses them off and tries to attack Rarity. Not knowing what to do with the appearently crazy mare, the gang decides to bring her to Celestia, something that Heartbreak is less than happy about. The first fic in the series is basicly about how Heartbreak is sent to Equestria, how he meets the ponies and the journey to see Celestia.
We also get to see the mane6 ponies try to deal with a psychotic pony who claims to not be a pony, who refuses to tell them what she used to be or how she knows so much about them. (by watching MLP OFC!)
The fic is written in two different styles, sometimes in a first person "me" as seen from Heartbreaks perspective, and sometimes a limited third person perspective, usually seen from Twilights view, but there has been exceptions.
Like I said, this fic is a comedy...a dark one, if you are like me and enjoy dark humour (dead baby jokes are personal faves of mine) you will enjoy seeing Heartbreak suffer in comedic ways.
As for characters, we got the earlier mentioned Heartbreak, all of mane6, Luna, Celestia, Heartbreaks brain (yes...don't ask) and in later fics, the Apple family and a couple of OCs.
I don't know if this is a theme, but much like Different Strokes, the start of Heartbreak is agonizing, the way he suddenly learns that many of his old exes are witches, a mad proffesor and even a werewolf just feels extremely forced and I had to mentally coax myself to even finish the first chapter, spurred only by my love for gender bender action.
I mean really, the worst thing (by far) in the Heartbreak series is the "villains", the magical "Fae", they feel uninspiring, boring and just plain forced. Yes, the fallout of what they have done is hillarious to the reader and devestating to Heartbreak, but they just don't feel believable. We never get any explanation of who they are except "Ex girlfriends that somehow for no reason at all got magic powers". Maybe I'm just overthinking this, but thats my main complaint about the series.
I have seen other people (especially in the later fics) complaining about the very slow pacing, but that doesn't bother me at all, I guess thats a preference thing tough as I usually prefer slow paced stories. So those of you who prefer quick action and fast paced stories, be warned, these arn't the fics you are looking for.
There's also some ideas in the world of Heartbreak that annoys me, I won't get into detail since there are some major spoilers that annoys me, but nothing that detracts too much from my enjoyment of the series.
Now then, what would make me recommend the fic to you?
Well for starters, Heartbreak (the character) himself is a strong selling point. Jet_Black1980 has somehow managed to create a character you both enjoy laughing at and feel sorry for, at the same time, yes his (mostly justified) whining can get a bit old at times, but it's easily outweighted by the crazy "conversations" he has with himself (or "brain").
A good example of this is the end of the first chapter, where I got my first hint that I was in fact going to enjoy this series of fanfics:
The pain of glass, wood and sound splinter my vision. You're going to die. Right, final thought. Make it a good one.
"I like turtles."
Fuck.
Other than that, Jet_Black1980 shares his view of what living in Equestria what might be like, complete with Lyra lead "Human Lovers Conventions" and inbetween all the sadistic enjoyment, whining and stupidity, the fic just oozes with...well in all honesty, it oozes with cuteness.
There's this one scene in the second fic (minor spoiler lawl) where Heartbreak sees Derpy, chasing her down, scaring the shit out of the poor pegasus, only to ask the confused mare for her autograph.
A minor warning, it's teen rated, so while no actual naughtyness occurs, the subject of being male turned female is a strong theme, and so is suddenly having a vagina.
Okay, finally, who would I recomend this series of fanfics to?
Well, anyone who got a sense of humour that leans towards the darker side, likes HiE, gender bender and doesn't mind a very slow paced story.
If more than one of those claims doesn't fit with you, you might wanna avoid it.
As always I wish it would contain porn, the setting is just perfect for it, but I know that won't happen.
I can't have everything I want I guess.
