Thoughts on the EG Trailer · 3:24am May 13th, 2013
Ok this assumes you've gone and seen the Equestrian Girls trailer by now.
If not, reading on puts the blame squarely on you for ignoring a blatant spoiler warning.
Right, now, by now I'm sure a decent chunk of the fandom has seen it: the official Equestrian Girls movie trailer. That's right, it's a movie, and not just a direct to DVD movie, it's getting a THEATRICAL RELEASE. ...Frankly, whatever else I think about it, I think THAT'S the thing that really pisses me off. Instead of getting some epic adventure with the newly winged Princess Twilight and her friends...we get Twilight (and Spike apparently) going to Earth, becoming human (and a frigging DOG)...and going to high school.
...Seriously, THAT'S what you want to give us for a FiM theatrical movie Hasbro?
It just seems like a huge insult to fans of the main series that they're making this a full blown theatrical release, even if only a limited one. I just get this horrible feeling that, instead of trying to take advantage of FiM's unexpected fanbase, Hasbro's trying to scare us off by doing stuff like this...
Anyhow, my feelings about how they're promoting this thing over the main show aside, let me continue this by saying that the trailer itself gives me hope that this project might not be the complete dung pile some of us think it is.
For starters, it seems the character designs will be the ones we saw from the original leaked image, and not the god awful, half-anthro ones from the more recent promotional images. While there are things about those designs I still don't like (the pony fur skin tones being the most obvious) it's a heck of a step up from the alternative. Second, while it does appear that a good chunk of the plot will be highschool hijinks, there do seem to be some things that might at least partially redeem it. Twilight still behaving like a pony in human form is something that makes me giggle every time I see the shot of her trying to gobble an apple, and the giant magical explosion in one shot sure seems to indicate that something major's going to go down.
Also, for those of us on the 'Sunset Shimmer for new villain' bandwagon, yay us, cause it looks like, human Sunset anyway, is the main antagonist.
*sigh* Ok, before I ramble on too long, and for the TL;DRs, let me bottom line it: Basically, while I'm still not thrilled this even exists, some of what I've seen makes me want to at least give it a chance. It's also my personal policy to not judge something before I actually see it, since I've liked a lot of movies that some critics panned. So my personal opinion is to wait for June and adopt a wait and see position til it actually comes out.
