Most of the people watching me will know this already, but I finally managed to get round to finishing Chapter 4 of An Earth Pony's Tale yesterday evening. To say I'm relieved is an understatement - both this chapter and the previous one were kind of a slog to write, and a combination of things made it difficult for me to stay motivated. Still, I've been trying to improve all the time, and hopefully you'll enjoy the result.
From a writing perspective, the best part about finishing this chapter is the fact I've finally managed to get the characters moving into the wider world of Ponyville. As a protagonist Dawn is not the sort of character who immediately leaps into exciting adventures in the same way that the mane six (with the possible exception of Fluttershy) do. so quite a lot of the last two chapters involved her being coaxed out of her shell by Twilight. I don't know quite how this came across to the reader, but while I was writing it occasionally became a source of frustration trying to find varied ways for Twilight, and later Spike, to persuade Dawn to do something. Even now I'm slightly worried that I've ended up repeating myself.
The other thing about finishing this chapter is that it manages to answer a few questions about the stone, which I was glad to get out into the open. There are still a few things that I've got to reveal, but now that I've established the main details I can begin to get the plot moving forwards. The end of the last chapter introduced, rather abruptly, a new character (or at least a new character's voice) into the mix, and without spoiling too much you be seeing a bit more of him in the next chapter. I'm not quite sure when that next chapter will appear, but I'm trying my best to make it as soon as possible.
