Choosing Magics · 11:06am Mar 4th, 2012

To anyone reading this, a question: What magics should our beloved ponies learn in my fic: "In a Strange Land"?

So far, my ideas are:

Twilight Sparkle: Red Mage (Final Fantasy, with some Negima thrown in for good measure); either Eight-Trigram Gembox (cross between Marisa Kirisame's Hakkero and the Soul of Thamasa from Final Fantasy VI... so basically an artifact that allows her to either cast any spell twice simultaneously, half mana cost of any spell, or cast Master Spark) or Nanoha's Raising Heart.

Rainbow Dash: Boramancer, Thule Medallion (Wolfenstein!), Armiger Milliplex (Negima!)

Rarity: Geomancer; Enchantress?; Runes Mistress? (last two would definitely be useful after everything is said and done), Jewel Golems, for sure.

Fluttershy: Either Shun Shun Rikka (which leaves both the questions of what the fairies would look like, and if Fluttershy has the assertiveness to tell the world to be nicer [THE STAAAAAAAAAAAAARU!!!!]), or the Lighthawk Wings paired with White Magic. Either way, she's the healer and support of the group. Summoner? She certainly seems the type-- if she were to ever summon one of her animal friends for aid, I'm fairly sure they would come running. Not that much of a stretch to apply that to summon creatures, as well. Of course, that leaves the question of what she should be able to summon? Final Fantasy espers/aeons/whatever they're calling it these days? Duel Monsters ("Screw the rules! I have money!" "How. Dare. You!" *STARE*)? Golden Sun summons (Iris meets Celestia... that oughta be interesting, huh?)?

Applejack: Geomancer/Floramancer, with apple theme? Treants, for sure. Perhaps some stuff from the Night Elves of Warcraft?

Pinkie Pie: Chaos-Sight (She breaks the fourth wall on a regular basis. Might as well make use of it.); Spark (The Girl Genius type, which makes her a mad scientist inventor. I'm thinking of having her build a Baneblade Tank for the rematch against Discord...); Bibliothecarius Ironicus (battle becomes one big costume party for her, and I'm sure she could find some uses for it afterwards)

Celestia: Fire Magics, definitely. Light, but leans more towards offensive White Magic (Holy, Dios, Flare [counts as Light in this case], etc.) than defensive White Magic (only defensive light spells she is especially skilled in is Raise and Re-raise); thinking of giving her the Lightbringer (cast Holy with no mana cost, or cast a suped-up Holy... cast Ra Tilt? Or gives her capabilities of the summon Alexander?)

Luna: Light, again, but more towards defensive Light magic (Cure branch, Heal, Shell, Reflect, Sheild, anything else I can think of) than offensive. Can use defensive Black Magic (status affecting spells, like Imp, Frog, Bio, etc.)... maybe Gravity branch and Instant Kill spells (X-zone, Black Hole, etc.). Should I give her the Silence Glaive? A bow and arrow set (you know, Artemis the Hunter, etc. etc.)? A rapier of some type? What kind of moon-themed weapons are out there?

Opinions would be gladly received! ^_^

Hm, this is a good question but, I believe my choices would be as follows. The format for my answers will be. Pony Name:Class - description of class abilities. (Place to look for an example.)
Twilight Sparkle: Grand Sage - Can use all white and black magics. (See = Final Fantasy IV the Sage Telsa)
Rainbow Dash: Ninja - The ninja skills are officially considered magic in Final Fantasy with the exception of Throw. (See = FFXI Ninjustu spells.)
Rarity: Materia Wielder - These are the gems that grant magic in FFVII and seeing as Rarity has a gem finder spell I believe this would be a good idea.
Fluttershy: White Mage/Summoner - While her main aspect should be healing magic she should also be able to summon Eidolins which are the Final Fantasy IX summons but they should stay summoned on a one at a time basis like the avatars from Final Fantasy XI. (See = Garnet/Dagger FFIX/Avatars FFXI summoner class.)
Applejack: Druid/Geomancer - While the Druid is more of a physical take on Geomancy there is still the aspect of dealing constant nature damage for both. (See = WoW Druid Class for the Druid I'm talking about.)
Pinkie Pie: I think your ideas are great for her can't come up with much better.
Princess Celestia: I completely agree though I believe you should give her a fire element summon as well. I would say Phoenix.
Princess Luna: While I know she's supposed to be good I could see her going the Cecil route. - Start off using black magic then shift to white mid way, or be able to switch between the two at will. The latter sounds better. (See Cecil the Dark Knight/Paladin FFIV)

There's my two bits and I'm glad your asking.

Twilight: Grand Sage, huh? Is that what they're calling it nowadays? Or is it just Telsa, in which then I'll stick with Red Mage, it being the technical term for someone who has access to both types of magicks.

Rainbow Dash: I don't know about this one... while Milliplex and Thule Medallion could make her an awesome ninja (one gives her unlimited throwable objects, the other can slow down time, among other things), and she did dress up as a ninja in that one episode, she's always seemed the type to forgo subtlety for getting in the enemy's face and bashing it in with extreme prejudice. A "Naruto" type ninja, maybe.

Rarity: I actually considered this, but I couldn't get it to work-- while Materia are gems, where the bleep would she get them? Not to mention, she'a obviously an Earth type, so letting her have access to the other elemental magic would throw off the theme. Hm... perhaps if I have her make her own "Materia"? I mean, it wouldn't be that hard to pausibly get her interested in the rune work necessary, as knowledge of such could be applied to the clothes she makes...

Fluttershy: Nothing to say here. We're pretty much in agreement...

Applejack: :ajsleepy: I don't know about making her a Druid... aside from not knowing enough about them, she doesn't seem the type to develope the deep connection with the land required. Turning her into a Floramancer was just extending her job and the suggested Earth Pony magic in a probable direction. Turning her into Druid... that seems like just this side of a stretch. Perhaps if you tell me more about the WoW Druid class?

Pinkie Pie: Glad to hear it. :pinkiehappy:

Celestia: :twilightblush: I'm sorry to say I cannot use this idea, as good as it is. Celestia technically already has a Phoenix summon: Philameana. Unfortunately, she's stuck in Equestria, and as far as this fic goes, Phoenix cannot flame across dimensions. And it would just seem a bit too much if I were to give her ANOTHER Phoenix. So no, sorry, no Phoenix summon for Celeistia.

Luna: ...Actually, you might have given me an idea: Reverse Cecil Route! She starts out with White Magic, but eventually learns to harness the abilities she had as Nightmare Moon. Thanks!

Thanks, your comment was much appreciated!

Your quite welcome and to address your concerns I'll explain the points you've had problems with.

About the grand sage, yes it was just Telsa while he did attribute it to being a much stronger version of the Red Mage.

I was kind of expecting the Naruto style ninja to begin with concerning Rainbow Dash. That's how they're played in FFXI anyway.

About the Materia, they are basically magically infused gems right? So I would expect something of a Rune Craft/Gemcraft combo for how that idea would work and just use Materia as the name for the finished product.

About Fluttershy. I'm glad you agree and I would suggest that her first summon be something cute like Carbuncle. Which she would probably have out when not in battle because it's a little glowing fox/rabbit thing and it would help her cope with her new surroundings. Besides in FFXI you had to name your summons to form the bond that allowed you to summon them... Kind of expecting it to be named Angelica because most often people assume Carbuncle is female.

Now that you mention it the Druid idea was kind of a stretch and I've never played that class personally so I can't go into much detail. Though I believe a Geomancer or Floramancer would work perfectly. Geomancers come in two types Nature magic and Elemental magic. I would suggest nature as they actually have a spell that summons exploding flowers. No joke there. Nature Geomancers are in fact upgraded Floramancers seeing as they can summon and control plant-life in any shape or form.

About Celestia I was kind of expecting that response. But I have prepared a counter idea. Seeing as Summoning is technically considered offensive light magic. I would have Celestia teach Fluttershy how to summon things. Carbuncle would be her gift to Fluttershy for completing the training.

I love the idea for Luna. You have a winning idea right there my friend.

24806

Summoning is considered offensive Light Magic? I always thought it was considered a branch of its own? And Celestia teaching Fluttershy how to summon... that would imply Celestia has summon contracts of her own. I kinda want to make summoning Fluttershy's thing, so... sorry, but no.

And what would an Elemental Druid be? Though the exploding flowers sound interesting... (Exploding Apples of DOOM!!! lol)

24809
True enough about the Celestia teaching Fluttershy thing. Wouldn't really work.
Summoning is considered Offensive Light magic due to summoners also learning all the other white magic. None of the named Characters have captured this essence in it's purest form except Dagger/Garnet in FFIX.

And an Elemental Druid can use the Primal elements. You know, Fire, Water, Air, & Earth? I recently looked up the two kinds of Final Fantasy druids which is where I came across the Elemental or Nature druid split. The Elemental druids are able to speak with nature and use the elements. They can also summon minor elemental Golems in the primal elements. Which I've stated above. Though most Elemental Druid's tend to favor a particular element.

(And I laughed when I realized that the Exploding Flowers spell would fit applejack's habit of tossing apples at enemies.:rainbowlaugh:)

24815

Ah, I see I see... you've given me lots to think about. Thanks!

24816
your welcome. Now if you'll excuse me. It's 6AM and I need some sleep. Take care my friend.

Everything you chose looks good though I think twilight should be an unusually powerful red mage since her talent is magic itself with her magic being unusually strong

29103

That's the plan. I'm thinking of taking her down the Lina/Nanoha path: overwhelming firepower, cute little package.

...I hate to be a downer on your high horse, but... is all of this OP stuff really necessary? I mean, sure, you've said that Harry is already godlike in this fic, but why do you feel the need to overcharge the Mane 6, too? Especially since they're going to eventually return to Equestria, and lose all of those abilities... right? Please don't tell me you're going to have them keep them when they get back, because they don't need such powers in their homeland. Not even for Discord.

Still, if I had to choose magics for them, I'd go with the following:

Twilight: Unlimited Red Mage (the typical FF Red Mage can't cast the same range of spells that a specialist White or Black mage can).
Rainbow: Aero/Electromancer (wind and electricity, two key elements of weather, perfect for this pony)
Rarity: Illusionist/Crystalmancer (she's got a talent for gems, so manipulating them isn't a stretch. As for illusions, she's got less raw power than Twilight, but a lot more finesse and creativity, which an illusionist needs)
Fluttershy: White Mage/Summoner (pretty much same as you yourself have it)
Applejack: Geo/Floramancer (again, same as what you've got)
Pinkie Pie: Naruto-style ninjutsu and reality warping magic (she already does the latter)
Celestia: Eh, nothing to say here aside from what you've got.
Luna: See above.

Also, will Rarity, Twilight, Luna, and Celestia learn how to harness HP-verse magic, since they have 'wands'?

72441

On the HP-verse magic: for the most part, no, because all of the canon spells are fairly useless against the Discord of my fic. The only things that could be useful would be conjuration, transfiguration, and rune magic, and only rune magic can be mastered to any degree that it would be useful in battle in the time they have-- HP canon suggests that conjuration and transfiguration take years of practice before they can be used effectively in battle, while there is almost no canonical information on runes, so liberties can be taken... like the idea that using runes effectively in battle is a matter of memorization and having the runes premade and ready.

On overpowering the Mane 6 and letting them keep that power: Yes, they will be needing that much power against Discord. He's a being capable of going toe to toe with both Royal Sisters and warps reality with a thought-- and now he's taking them seriously, unlike his canon self. As it is, even with the upgrades, the gang might still have a bit of trouble with him. Also, they will be keeping that power after Discord, because magic can't just be taken away. Besides, who's to say there won't be anything after Discord...?

And I like the idea of Illusionist!Rarity, thanks! ^_^

72787 Well, as long as the overpowering doesn't happen all at once, then I suppose I can live with it. But, I'd like a little backstory to the HP side of things. I know you said you'd weave it into the story, but I'd like to know more! Why is Harry this powerful? Why are all of these women bonded to him? And why did he call Celestia and Luna 'Life-bringer' and 'Rest-giver'? Answers would be nice!

And you're welcome for the idea of Rarity using illusions. It's a popular pasttime in other fanfics that involve her.

72812

The first question will be answered in the next chapter. The second question might or might not be answered in the next chapter. The third question will be partially answered in the next chapter. Next chapter will be up... soon, hopefully-- I'm eight pages in, but the sisters are really, really hard to write for (damn Luna's Shakespearean English! And damn Celestia's character in general!!!), so progress is slow.

If you're gonna have Luna go the Cecil Route (reverse or otherwise) then make her wand turn into a scythe (Bleach style), since the blades on them resemble a crescent moon.

For Pinkie, weaponize her Party Cannon (she doesn't go anywhere without it, after all).

Rainbow seems like the type to either go bare-hoofed in a fight, or use small blades, possibly on her wings.

Huge Hammer for Applejack. if used right, she could use it to clear some space (like Link's Megaton Hammer) for everypony to do whatever they do. Besides, she seems to be the only one with the physical strength to use one...

Raising Heart for OP Red Mage Twilight, because if it ain't overkill, it ain't dead. ... Or, you know, some kind of spell book, if you want...dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/shrug_Twilight_Sparkle.png

The Caduceus (a magic staff with two snakes wrapped around it, for those that don't know) goes to Fluttershy, since the medical community adopted it as one of it's many symbols, it just fits with her. (insert squeaking/smiling Fluttershy here)

For Rarity... er... some kind of bow or rapier or something graceful like that... maybe a jewel-encrusted staff. hard to pin something to her personality...

For Celestia, something to represent her connection to the sun... I got even less of an idea for her than Rarity (read: No Idea At All!!!!)

I know this is is supposed to be for magic, but every thing I could come up with was already taken, so it was either a list of complimentary weapons, or nothing at all. besides, could you imagine just how their magic could mix with weapons?:pinkiehappy:

112525

For Luna: You actually almost hit it in one-- I'm planning on giving her Zangetsu. It's called Slaying Moon, so why not?

For Pinkie: What do you think the Baneblade Tank is? "Well, what do you have in mind Pink-- OH DEAR CELESTIA WHAT IN TARTARUS IS THAT?!?" "Do you like it? I call it the Mega-Super-Duper-Really-Really-Big Party Cannon Deluxe!" "...*Thunk*" "...Girls? Girls?" :pinkiehappy:

For Rainbow: I... actually have a different idea for her. Think the most bad-ass maid ever created in gaming history.

For Applejack: While it may not be a hammer, I do have something for her: that sheild-morningstar weapon from Beet the Vandal Buster.

For Twilight: Looking more and more likely. Still up in the air, though.

For Fluttershy: I have her relic already. It's a counterpart to, strangely enough, Angel.

For Rarity: Rune-based magic style utilizing gems, for sure. Not sure about artifact yet.

For Celestia: Definitely giving her the Sol Blade. It just fits, and it summons a massive ball of flames and plasma as a special attack (Megiddo).

So, what do you think? And yes, I can imagine just what would happen if they mixed magic with some of these weapons. Especially Celestia and her Sol Blade-- she'll be summoning a mini-sun every time she activates the sword. :trollestia:

116732 OP FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!!!!!

The portrayal of Rarity sounds like Rin Tosaka from Fate, Stay Night game, which fits really.
Twilight sounds good as a jack-of-all-trades sort of mage with some sort of tome or grimoire.
Rainbow Dash would likely use magic to increase her speed for something like a flash-step/shumpo style and after-image ability. Apple Jack would likely do something similar but with more emphasis on straight then speed.
I can see Fluttershy as a summoner, I can also see her as a type of beast/spirit tammer. (but that might be impractical.)
Pinkie.....Hmmmmm...... a bard..... perhaps a mechinist? She's a tough one.
Celestia could summon a dragon, but I like your idea better.
I like the idea of the reverse Cecil style for Luna.

24804 I agree with most of the Idea, but I would change two characters Somewhat

Applejack: Squire series [Golden Sun: Squire, Knight, Gallant, Lord, Slayer]: I figure Applejack would make a Decent Venus Adept [Then she would learn Earth based Psynergy such as [Quake, Earthquake, Quake Sphere]

Fluttershy: Water Seer series [Mercury Psynergy]: I figure due to Fluttershy's kind nature she should be the group healer and she would learn Water and Ice based techniques [Ply [Single Heal], Ply Well.Pure Ply, Wish [party heal], Wish Well, Pure Wish [Ice, Ice Horn, Ice Missile

116732 Give Rainbow Dash a Pair of Cetsus [Ancient Greek Fighting Gloves [Can have Blades, claws, nails and any nasty things to you can think of attached to it]

710082 Glad to see another Golden Sun fan! :yay:

--I will admit that I have been reconsidering for Applejack-- my original plan for her to be a Floramancer with an Apple theme is rather constricting, so I might give her some purely ground-type spells.

--Rainbow Dash has Milliplex (think Unlimited Blade Works in the form of an artifact... or Gate of Babylon, now that I think about it) and, as a pegasus, can be taught lightning magic. Hence, she can just magnetize a couple of blades to her hooves and make Cetsus obsolete. Nice thought, though.

--Fluttershy is an Earth type, through and through, so no, sorry, no Water Psynergy/Magic; an Earth affinity is the only explanation I can think of for her simultaneous gift with animals and lack of skill with flying. On the bright side, though, Earth Psynergy has its own Healing branch of magic, so she'll still be a healer!

715928 if you are going to give Applejack Ground spell [give her my fav game Earth Spell] [Quaither] [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br1hsNo4nQI

717032

...That... that is awesome. I mean... wow. Seriously. I'll see what I can do-- even if Applejack doesn't get that spell, I am so giving it to Twilight or Rarity.

717764 This is one of the bosses from the game that Quaither is from [It show's how the spell is executed in it]
