Discord and Bronies · 8:13pm Jan 20th, 2013
I just finished watching Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony, and I was floored. It completely captured my own experiences with the fandom (minus the fact that I've never been to a Con), and I think the "sample bronies" they chose were excellent. Great music ("Proud to be a Brony" especially), great art, great people, and a couple of original animations just for the documentary. John de Lancie even does a little musical number, which is hilarious in so many ways that I can't begin to explain them. If you haven't watched it yet, spend the $12.99 or whatever and grab some popcorn. It's worth it.
Speaking of John de Lancie, I'd like to go into yesterday's episode ("Keep Calm and Flutter On") a bit. I've expressed my personal opinion on Discord before; as a villain, I didn't see anywhere for him to go. KCFO, to my delight, proved me wrong. By making the Mane Six's task not to defeat him, but rather to reform him, the writers allowed Discord to still develop as a character without just recycling him from "The Return of Harmony".
The reformation of Discord, according to many people who's opinions I respect, happened far too quickly. I, however, disagree. Just look at his reaction to Fluttershy calling him a friend. It's clear that he values her friendship, as proven by the way he talks to her (specifically to her; note how he basically ignores the other five) at Sweet Apple Acres. Discord has always done what he wants, and that hasn't changed. What has changed is that he now has something he values more than unbridled freedom: a friend. Not only is this believable for an admitted loner like him, it's also perfectly in line with the show's theme. Just look at the title, and at Discord's fantastic dropping of the same: "Friendship is Magic".
