There are Stars in Her Eyes: A Prolouge to Rising Star and Fixing Hearts
Starheart's Backstory. Growing up in Los Pegasus was hard on Starheart. Her famous parents, a Film Director father and an actress mother, were always away. She eventually moved to Canterlot, where she attended Celestia's school of magic, and though she tried her hardest, was barely getting by. She met Princess Luna on her way to a Wonderbolts show one day, and looked up to the Alicorn. Luna inspired her to work harder at her studies and started her on star-gazing.

Rising Stars and Fixing Hearts
Starheart becomes Princess Luna's personal student, after a chance meeting during one of Starheart's nightly wanderings throughout Canterlot. When Luna met Starheart a second time, Starheart was carrying her telescope to a cliff higher on Mount Solaris (The mountain that Canterlot is on). Luna took Starheart on her back, and she got the best view of the stars she had ever seen. She

I always enjoy seeing Luna in a mentor role :) If you don't mind me making a suggestion - a dramatic take on your second idea could be that Starheart actually falls off the cliff while trying to climb up with her telescope, and Luna saves her life. It would prove to Luna how devoted she is to astronomy (and possibly how she needs guidance, so that she doesn't do silly things like trying to climb a cliff in the dark while carrying a telescope ^^)
