The Hamilton AU (AKA Hamiltrot: An Equestrian Musical) · 1:10am Apr 28th, 2016

"Why do you write like you're running out of time?"

So I was at Babscon this past weekend, which really rekindled my interest in the fandom, and I've been obsessing over Hamilton for the past few months, so I thought, why not combine two fabulous things into one amazing one? I ended up with a pretty cool AU if I do say so myself. I'm probably not going to write it out, so I thought I should at least put the AU down here.

The characters are placed as I think they would fit personality wise, so things which may be ships in the musical aren't necessarily implicated in this. This is mostly because I don't really have any definitive ships in the fandom anymore, and I'm a multishipper anyways, so yeah. I'll place who I put as each character and my explanation for that placement below!

Twilight Sparkle as Alexander Hamilton
While a small fraction of this casting is due to them both being the central characters in their respective works, that really only gave me more of a reason to compare them to see if they would fit. Their shared love for academics, need to be accepted in their new homes (Ponyville for Twilight and New York for Hamilton), and fortitude in stressful situations make me think they fit pretty well together.

Sunset Shimmer as Aaron Burr
Aaron Burr was constantly in the shadow of Hamilton, who accomplished all the things he wished he could. In a similar manner, Twilight was able to succeed where Sunset Shimmer failed. Another trait they share is their ambition which brought their downfalls, and their strong regret after realizing what their actions have caused.

Applejack as John Laurens
John Laurens, the abolitionist who was set in his morals, and one of Hamilton's closest friends, is a wonderful parallel for Applejack, who knows what she wants and fights for what she knows is right.

Pinkie Pie as Hercules Mulligan
The pair of them are two peas in a pod, loud, boastful, and fun but also possessing an unexpected way of finding things out. For Hercules Mulligan, he spies on the British government for the revolution, and his covertness is unexpected based on his loud character. For Pinkie, her innate sense of what's happening, as well as her ability to break the 4th wall fits her eccentric character, but still seems strange.

Rainbow Dash as the Marquis de Lafayette
They're both bright and boastful, but their boasts are not at all unfounded. They both know they're good at what they do, and continuously prove their skills. (Ok and I admit that Rainbow being a Pegasus from Cloudsdale and Lafayette being an immigrant from France had a bit to do with it.)

Fluttershy as Eliza Schuyler
"You will never find anyone as trusting or as kind." While that's a verse about Eliza, it absolutely applies to Fluttershy as well. While she usually doesn't need to, Eliza absolutely can hold her own (see: Burn), and is terrifying when pushed, just like Fluttershy (See: anytime ponies or animals misbehave too much).

Rarity as Angelica Schuyler
Angelica is very smart, which she pairs with a huge sassy side. She also gives up Hamilton because she knows it will make her sister happy and knows she's expected to marry rich (AKA GENEROUS AF). She's also absolutely a proper lady, but hides a big personality under her ladylike training. Rarity is also a proper lady but has a wonderful sassy side. She is also very generous (I mean it is her element).

Sweetie Belle as Peggy Schuyler
I mean this is mostly because she's Rarity's younger sister, but also Hamilton's line "Peggy confides in me" and Twilight's magic mentoring for Sweetie Belle.

Princess Celestia as George Washington
Princess Celestia is a mother/mentor figure to Twilight, and she is very wise and knows that she has many faults. The same could easily be said for George Washington, who constantly acknowledged his faults, and became a father figure to Hamilton.

Starlight Glimmer as Thomas Jefferson
So Jefferson and Madison were harder to place, mostly because the majority of MLP villains didn't really fit very well. But I thought that Starlight Glimmer would fit decently as Jefferson, as her ideal absolutely oppose Twilight's (at least before she's reformed). She also wants everyone's freedom (in the form of removing cutie marks) while Jefferson has similar ideas of at least all white men being equal and free of too much government control.

Trixie as James Madison
OK so a lot of this comes from the premise of the next episode (No Second Prances), and I may edit this after the episode comes out, but as Starlight Glimmer makes friends with Trixie as fellow former villains, I feel like its a good placement. Madison shares many ideals with Jefferson, and at least in the musical, is portrayed as kind of the backup to Jefferson. I can see Trixie kind of doing this with Starlight, so that's part of it. Trixie is also self-important and opposes Twilight many times.

Discord as King George II
I'll give you three seconds to imagine Discord singing "You'll Be Back." I think my point is made. If not, think about this: who would be most likely to sing a breakup song because their colonies had a revolution: Absolutely Discord.

Spike as Phillip Hamilton (IM SO SORRY)
Spike is the closest thing Twilight has to a son, and is fiercely protective of Twilight, young, and naive. He would absolutely challenge someone to a duel (if that were a thing ponies do) if they raked her name through the mud.
