Greetings, folks! This is Mr. J back with another MLP episode review for today. This afternoon, I will be reviewing the sixth episode of MLP: FIM season 7 entitled “Forever Filly”, written by the Fox brothers. As I previously commented before in one of my past episode reviews, I remembered enjoying this episode and regarded it as one of the best episodes these gentlemen wrote for the show.

After rewatching this earlier today, I still uphold that opinion with great delight. It taught great lessons about maturity and growth; it even showcased the importance of recognizing one’s growth as your younger sibling or child gets older.

The episode starts with Rarity getting things done in a timely fashion, much to the relief of Sassy Saddles. The moment things get too comfortable for Rarity in the Canterlot Carousel, she sees an old picture of her and Sweetie Belle—making her realize how long it’s been since they’ve seen each other.

Breaking down in tears, she laments and weeps sourly until Saddles decides to let her have her time-off so she can spend quality time with her little sister. Instantly happy with the idea and grateful for her help, Rarity heads off to see her sister.

Meanwhile, Sweetie Belle and the other CMCs are helping other fouls earn their cutie marks. Once they prepare to help out another foul named Zipporwhill get reconnected with her dog, Rarity jumps in and reunites with a surprised Sweetie.

So throughout the day, Rarity does all the stuff Sweetie used to do with her when she was a foal but now no longer likes. While Sweetie suffers from miserable boredom, Apple Bloom and Scootaloo try to help the poor filly with getting her dog Ripley to play with her…with baby chew toys. The dog simply doesn’t like the way she’s treating him and instead just lies around.

I love the way this episode connected both plot A and plot B together to convey one message; both parties are dealing with issues that come down to treating their pets/children/younger siblings like babies despite the fact they’re much older now.

I’m still slightly annoyed they never bothered giving us an actual age for these characters like Sweetie Belle. Because how long has it been since they were first introduced in season 1? I’m gonna take a wild guess and say Sweetie is now 13 around this time (same age as AB and Scoots) because the way she felt embarrassed and miserable in this episode is something a teenager would feel.

Not to mention how she speaks and acts so maturely. She’s definitely gotten older over the course of the show.

Aside from this minor nitpick, this is a very important episode for both kids and adults to watch and learn. It’s very easy to be caught up with emotions and for parents to treat their older children like babies…which is obviously not a healthy way to maintain your relationship with them.

Both parents and guardians must always remember that children will not always be children and that they will grow up to be mature, responsible adults just like them. Now remember, there’s nothing wrong with being homesick or nostalgic about childhood memories. That in itself is perfectly okay!

Hell, sometimes even I can get emotional over the childhood memories I have. That’s fine. The problem is that there is a little child in us that is still immature, and it needs to be weeded out. As kids grow up, they develop new tastes, new habits, new hobbies, new dreams, and new goals. That’s just the reality of life.

But most importantly, never treat your younger siblings like toddlers. I can understand why Sweetie felt so miserable with Rarity here because the latter kept patronizing her and viewing her as a foal still. It makes sense why she lashed out and trotted off.

Now at the end, Sweetie finally figured out why Ripley didn’t want to play with Zipporwhill; the dog was already older and bigger at this point, so he had no love for puppy chew toys anymore. Rarity recognized the same lesson applied to her, and she made amends with Sweetie afterwards.

Again, the Fox brothers did a brilliant job writing this episode and conveying this object lesson for everyone to learn. Rarity and Sweetie can now do stuff together that they both can enjoy like eating huge ice cream sundaes. Haha!

With that said, this gets a solid A-! Aside from Rarity acting so uncomfortably weird towards Sweetie Belle, I still love this episode and the way they wrote this story. Definitely one of the most solid and relevant episodes I’ve seen in this show.

Peace!

Seems like these Fox Brothers know their stuff when it came to writing this.
Who were your least favourite writers on the show, given there were a lot of good and bad episodes in between.

Honestly this lesson resonated me a bit as I read this since I am kind of having this issue with my mom(and also of her damn boyfriend).
Specifically trying to control me like a little child while I am staying with them as I try to save up money and get my own place at last.

Nicole Dubuc, Michael Vogel, and Joshua Hamilton.

Damn! I take it, they wrote some of the worst episodes in the show and were responsible for some of the ones you already reviewed, if I'm not mistake.

Yes, and trust me, next week’s episode review will not be pretty. All HELL will break loose.

I agree. “Forever Filly” was another winner from Season 7 in my book.

The messages it gave were incredibly well-handled, and the situations were relatable. I also enjoyed how the sister-dynamic between Rarity and Sweetie Belle was portrayed, especially on the grounds of how much things changed.

It's foals not fouls.
