Some background music. You're going to need it: we're going to be here a while.

    Status Update, April 2024 Edition

Part of my slowness in writing M.L.G.'s latest chapter is for the usual reasons: tiredness, minor depression, having other things on the mind, that sort of thing. However, in what can only be described as "whimsy", I've recently decided to complete a list of all of the intentional shout-outs and references in the story as of the most recent chapter.

    Something To Think About

I have a message to share with prospective authors. If you go into writing a story---be it as a living, or just for fun---don't automatically assume that what you're doing is wholly original.

    Tired, Running On Empty

That pretty much summarizes my mental state of the past few days. Constantly tired (half due to not getting enough sleep and half due to my walking regimen), and I can't really think of things I want to write for the story. You know you're having trouble finding things to talk about when your brain fishes for tuna, but ends up with guppies instead.

    So INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATED Right Now

I copied the latest chapter of M.L.G. to my flash drive as usual. I took it home with the intent to post it today. I double-click the file.

How Curtis Wildcat Writes the World · 2:04pm March 11th

Or, to put it another way, the rules I abide by when it comes to the stuff I write on this site. My mind doesn't necessarily function the same way everyone else's does, so there may be some discrepancies. Have some background music in the meantime.

#1: I will not disregard something and treat it as non-canonical just because I don't like it or the characters within. My personal opinions aren't going to change the fact that the events happened as depicted.

  • #1a: I will not acknowledge controversial opinions or attempts to start arguments by overly biased people and those incapable of viewing things in the proper context. I write stories and go online to relax and have fun; doing those other things isn't going to help my health at this point in my life. On this site, I had to leave several groups I'd previously frequented for this reason.

#2: I will not resort to character bashing. I'd like to think I've mentally matured past that point. If I don't like a character then so be it, but all of them deserve more respect than to be ridiculed just for existing. There's people like them in real life just as much as in fiction, after all.

  • #2a: The only characters I truly "hate" are the genuinely unrepentant jerks (ex. Lightning Dust, Svengallop, etc.), as I've had bad experiences with bullies and similar people in the distant past. All the same, if I incorporate characters like them in what I write, I'd like to hope that I could do them justice instead of retaliating by proxy.
  • #2b: The "Flanderization" and "Ron the Death Eater" tropes are straight up off the table. No questions asked, moving on.
  • #2c: Characters are the sum of their parts, not their individual traits or actions.

#3: I don't utilize profanity (at least, not the real-life variety) or sexual situations in my stories.

  • #3a: I'm not a fan of romance as far as the "I love you, now kiss me you fool" aspect of it is concerned. I've never really understood it, if I'm being honest (and this is despite the fact that my parents have been married for 51 years). If I do incorporate it, such as with Gray Ghost and Ocean Guard in M.L.G., I'd like to keep it straightforward to avoid unneeded complications and arguments.
  • #3b: I don't do shipping, either, so de-equip your goggles before reading my stories. I'd much rather be a writer without pier. Exceptions are made where laughter is concerned.

#4: Making sense is optional, not required. I like to quote Bugs Bunny from "Rabbit Every Monday" in connection with this: "I don't ask questions. I just have fun!" Thus, if I feel that something warrants an explanation, I'll try to think one up. If they don't, then I won't. Simple as that. If you see something in my stories that doesn't make sense realistically, that's intentional.

  • #4a: Expect to see artistic license here and there. Just because I like to exercise my imagination doesn't mean I can imagine up the correct facts for given situations. I'm a title researcher by profession, not a computer programmer. (I failed algebra as a course twice, once each in high school and college, and my grades in science were average at best. Make of that what you will.)
  • #4b: I grew up on a steady diet of Nickelodeon (before Nicktoons swamped the channel), Warner Bros., MGM, Hanna-Barbera, and whatever the local networks had to offer. With that in mind, to quote the Tiny Toon Adventures theme: "Our scripts were rejected. Expect the unexpected."

#5: I'll try to incorporate constructive criticism the best that I can, as long as people realize that the term is not a synonym of "insult". If you can't be tactful, don't say anything at all. I'd rather take a thumbs-down than deal with comments that can be boiled down to "you're wrong because you're stupid".

#6: I don't like writing dark and depressing stuff, as I've made clear with recent chapters in M.L.G. as of this post. I'm capable of it on some level, but I prefer not to, so I'll try not to do so unless I have no other choice. There's too much of that mindset in the world without me adding to it, and I'd just as soon keep my mind from wandering down that path. That way lies disaster. As an old friend of mine used to say: "KILL the dark fic. BURN the angst. PURGE the bad end."

  • #6a: Yes, having happy endings in everything is unrealistic. No, I don't particularly care. As I just got done implying, tragedies depress me and drive my mind in a direction I'd rather it didn't take. All there is to it.

The bottom line is: Fimfiction's in place for those that like to read and write stories about equines with technicolor dream coats, and I'm here for those reasons specifically. So slam the oven door and join the party, would ya?

And that's everything. If the need arises, I'll amend this list at a later time. Ciao mein, everyone.
