My understanding of it is that it was a stupid joke based on the doors videos that has MLP:FIM joining all of the other great shows of the decade in cancelation and it just got way too popular.
If I recall, the original ship came from a fanfic from the early 2010s. A fan of said fanfic drew a (rather infamous) fan art of said ship with lyrics from a certain song.
The internet, being itself, rediscovered the fan art, and the rest is history.
