    Check In

    Afternoon/evening folks!

Sorry I haven't been checking in as often as I should; rest assured I'm not dead, I'm still here, just been silent as of late. Still working on fics, but also constantly debating with myself on what to focus on next, wanted to make some new stuff that isn't just Shattered or Star Wars. Wanna bring more folks in, do somethin' new.

    Top Ten Films/Series Of 2023/Reflections

First off, Happy New Year's Eve everyone!

Hard to believe another year has passed, hasn't it? *sighs* how time has flown by. A lot's happened this year; more stories, more creativity and entertainment has come, and I've learned more about myself, and I am very glad for that.

Another Round Of Quickie Reviews! · 9:57pm Aug 27th, 2023

Ya'll saw the title, so let's get into it.

Barbie

I had a fun time with this movie. Now I don't plan on seeing it again, but it was a generally fun time. It was silly, it was stupid, it's everything fun you'd want. I also love the fun nods and touches with the toy's history, cause oooh boy, it's staggering when you realize some of the recalled toys they bring up are REAL. The performances were solid from everyone, Margot Robbie is great as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, and even the other actors do a great job too; especially Will Ferrell.

Overall, I think it's enjoyable. Stupid, silly, insane, but has some geninuely heart-touching moments as well. I recommend giving it a watch even if it's just once.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

I thought this movie was okay. I enjoyed it well enough, though I don't plan on seeing it again anytime soon. The animation is solid as always, I love seeing Spider-Verse style of animation popping up again, I think it lends itself well for great animated sequences. The characters were all solid, especially the villains. I think it's also a nice touch that obscure mutants from the old 80s cartoon (that I only know thanks to Phelous touching upon them), showed up here as well. The voice actors do solid as the individual turtles, and I like this new spin on April O'Neil, I think she was pretty good. Now I'm not gonna compared this to other incarnations, cause frankly, I'm a more of a casual viewer when it comes to the TMNT, but I had an okay experience overall. But if ya'll are a huge fan of the Turtles, I guarantee you'll have a fun time with this movie.

Skull Island: The Anime

I binged this series all the way through when I saw it was available. I really enjoyed this one; it was cool stepping back into Skull Island, there were some nice characters throughout, and even some surprises that I'll admit I never saw coming. Props to the animators as well, they did great with this series. I also love the unique monsters and creatures throughout; we do get some familiars here and there, but there are plenty of new monsters and animals that I think expand the lore rather well. Overall, just generally a solid anime, at least to me. Only thing I didn't like was the cliffhanger ending which left a lot of unanswered questions. If there's a second season coming, hopefully it'll expand and explain where the rest of the characters were that we didn't see get resolved, but still.

Hello Tomorrow!

I... wanted to love this show. I want to love this, but the focuses are so misguided that it honestly makes it really dull at times. Think about it; a show set in a retro-futuristic era; it resembles what people in the 50s imagined the future, giving a semi-Fallout vibe to it. There's no racism (at least as far as I know), and despite some sexism still present in some parts, it looks like a legit perfect future. But the one thing that frustrates me the most that I wish they did was do some solid world-building. We do not know how this world exists, we don't know how everything came to be.

And honestly, I feel like taking an episode or two to introduce us to this world would have been really helpful. How did technology advance and still have a 50s flavor to it? How did we get robots? How did this culture develop, I want to know these things but the show does not care about following up with those plots or ideas, and instead focuses more on the characters and their interpersonal drama with... selling houses on the moon. And by the time you get to the last episode and it ends, you're just left going... whaaatt???? No followup, nothing resolved? The characters just sent all the people they conned on a rocket, who are going to find out that there are no houses on the moon, and we're not gonna follow up with that?

Actually no, I think we all know how it was going to end; with all their butts going straight to jail. Period. Honestly, the best parts about this show is any detail in the interior, the package design, the effects, the robots, literally all the set-dressing is the best part of the show. And it's a shame. I hope we do get another retro-futuristic show/movie later in the future and they do a better job of world-building.

I liked Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves, The Super Mario Bros Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Flash, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Blue Beetle

I’m planning on seeing the new Ninja Turtles movie soon, and maybe do The Nun II, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and whatever else comes out later on, including The Marvels.

All sounds like a fair set of reviews to me. I'm glad you thought the new Turtles was enjoyable.

I still need to see Barbie sometime...

I actually saw Barbie with my sister and mom. It wasn't what I expected from a movie based on a little girl's toy, that's for sure. I enjoyed it and there were quite a couple funny bits. But it was also pretty thought provoking.
