Tragedy at Spa Francorchamps · 2:52pm Jul 1st, 2023
Today Dilano van't Hoff, a Formula Regional driver, died today in a crash at Spa. The track conditions were wet and looking at the video, the spray coming from the cars should have been a sign to red flag (stop) the race. We've been seeing the red flag used at a lot of wet F1 races in recent times because the spray that comes from these cars makes it near impossible to see what's in front of you if you're following another car. Add on top of that these are young drivers who don't have close to the experience as F1 drivers... it was tempting fate if you ask me. Dilano was just 18 years old and damn I wish I could say this is the first time in recent memory we saw a young driver loose his life. But in 2019 at the same track, F2 driver Antoine Hubert was also involved in a crash that took his life, though that was in dry conditions. Motorsport has come a long way in safety but the fact remains that it's still an incredibly dangerous sport, especially open wheel racing. These people risk their lives following their dreams and doing what they love. My prayers go out to Dilano's friends and family. I can't begin to imagine what they're going through right now.
