MLP Season 6 Rewatch Thoughts

Before I talk about the season, I think I need to address the fact that it’s been 3 months since I made my last season review. You may think this is because Season 6 was so bad that I had to take a break or something, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m actually midway through Season 8 now. I was just lazy when it came to writing this. With that out of the way...

Season 6 is one of the most controversial seasons of the show, and I never really understood why. It may not reach the same highs that other seasons do, but it’s consistent like few others. But while I love it a lot, I feel like I don’t have as much to say about it as with others, so for some of the episodes I won’t be giving thoughts, just a rating.

The Crystalling - Flurry is absolutely adorable, and Starlight/Sunburst are a really enjoyable pair. 8.5/10

The Gift of the Maud Pie - Maud and Rarity are a pair I never knew I wanted until I had it. 9/10

On Your Marks - Applebloom’s song is really nice and Tender Taps is cool. 8/10

Gauntlet of Fire - 9.5/10

No Second Prances - Startrix is amazing. 9/10

Newbie Dash - “Hazing is good and you should get used to it.” That’s basically this episode. Some of Rainbow’s shenanigans are fun, but they can’t save the episode. 3/10

A Hearth’s Warming Tail - A really cozy and fun episode with great songs. 9/10

The Saddle Row Review - Absolutely the funniest episode of the season, and a good contender for funniest of the SERIES. 9.5/10

Applejack’s “Day” Off - Underrated tbh. Definitely not on par with most episodes, but quite enjoyable in its own right with a nice lesson. 7.5/10

Flutter Brutter - Honestly a super underrated episode. Zephyr’s story is told so well and he’s extremely relatable, if a bit much (in an intentional way). The only problem is that the song somewhat rushes the ending, but other than that the episode’s basically perfect, and I love Fluttershy helping someone else out from a stagnancy similar to what she went through for the first 4 seasons. 9.5-10/10

Spice Up Your Life - I love the vibe, and the anti-conformity lesson was nice (I don’t think it’s an attack against the idea of criticism like some say it is). The incredible song doesn’t hurt either. 8.5/10

Stranger Than Fan Fiction - 9/10

The Cart Before the Ponies - Nice lesson, but pretty wonkily paced. 8/10

28 Pranks Later - Ohhhhhh boy, I know I’m in hot water for this rating, but just hear me out. It’s really funny and tense, and the lesson about respecting your friends’ boundaries is extremely important. Plus, Pinkie did actually try talking Rainbow out of her prank, but Rainbow didn’t listen, so they had to take more drastic measures. I don't think the town was too mean, and Rainbow can often be someone that doesn't listen to reason, so I'd say she's pretty in character, maybe just a bit exaggerated. 9/10

The Times They Are A Changeling - Probably the best Spike episode in the whole show. I love Thorax and the song a lot. 9.5/10 

Dungeons & Discords - Discord always makes episodes super fun, and Spike and Big Mac are a way better pair than they have any right to be. 9/10

Buckball Season - A simple episode, but extremely enjoyable and Flutterboss is great. 9.5/10

The Fault in Our Cutie Marks - GABBY! 9/10

Viva Las Pegasus - 9/10

Every Little Thing She Does - The spell showcase at the beginning is really neat, and while Starlight definitely messed things up big time here, I don’t think it was that bad. What she did wasn’t that different from what Twilight did in Lesson Zero. And she definitely learned her lesson. 8/10

P.P.O.V - 8.5/10

Where The Apple Lies - Very very fun and funny and seeing the origin of Applejack and Big Mac’s defining traits is really cool. 9/10

Top Bolt - Vapor Trail and Sky Stinger are amazing, and have a really cute backstory. Twilight and Rainbow bounce off of each super well too, making for some winning comedy, especially with that horn moment. 9.5/10

To Where And Back Again - Starlight’s arc is wrapped up very well, and the team of Starlight, Trixie, Discord, and Thorax is amazing. They have great chemistry, which leads to some wonderful humour. But despite that, it’s still a pretty tense finale, and Chrysalis is in top form here. 9/10

Legend of Everfree - This is the 2nd worst EQG movie, but that’s not saying much considering how amazing RR and FG are, and it's still a phenomenal movie. The atmosphere is really nice and cozy, it’s probably the funniest EQG movie, Twilight’s conflict is touching and engaging, her and Sunset’s dynamic is great with Sunset becoming what Twilight once was to her, Gloriosa is probably the best example of a sympathetic villain in the whole franchise, and the soundtrack is so good. 9.5-10/10

Like I said at the beginning, I loved this season a lot. Of the ones I’ve rewatched so far, it’s actually my 3rd favourite season, right behind Season 2. It doesn’t have any episodes that are truly series highlights (Flutter Brutter and Legend of Everfree are pretty close though), but there are so few episodes that aren’t at least 8.5 that it balances out. My favourite “episode” is Legend of Everfree as it's just so balanced in all of it's excellent qualities, and my least favourite is Newbie Dash for having one of the worst morals in the show and just not being THAT enjoyable otherwise. I give Season 6 a 9.5/10, just missing the perfect score due to not having high enough peaks.
