One-Off Surprise! · 6:15pm Feb 15th, 2023
If you haven't already seen, I released a story yesterday for Valentine's day! It's a SciSet story, and it takes place between chapters two and three of Can You See What I See?, but it's independent of that story.
This may seem like it was out of left field considering I'm currently working on two other projects and have made no mention of this at all any time in the past, but I've actually had this story sitting in my archive for quite some time. Not only have I had it sitting around for a while, but I had the idea for the story before I even wrote CYSWIS.
Believe it or not, this story actually didn't even start out as a story. First, it was a song I wrote in August – about a week before the first chapter of CYSWIS dropped. At the time, I didn't know what the song was about. When I write music, I don't tend to go into it with an idea. I just start writing, and once I've found something to build off of, I eventually find the narrative either while I'm working on the song or after it's done.
Unfortunately, I won't be sharing the song. Don't worry, though, you're not missing out on much. It's an instrumental, so there are no lyrics or anything in it. Not only that, but the final story actually deviates a bit from the narrative of the song anyway, so they don't match 1:1 like they did in the beginning.
Anyway, about a month after I began work on Chromatic Aberration, I felt an irresistible urge to write more SciSet stuff, and I wanted it to connect to CYSWIS as well because that's just the kind of self-obsessed cat I am. So I did a quick reread of that story, and picked out a passage to write something around. That passage was this part in chapter four:
With this in mind, I remembered the song I wrote, and smashed the narrative of that together with an idea that would match this passage. The earliest scrawlings of this concept on paper were written in early September, but the first real draft of this story was written in November. It was actually written from Twilight's perspective (third person limited). But, after a couple drafts of trying that, I ended up going with my usual first person Sunset pov instead. There are a few reasons I decided this, mostly due to conflicting continuity.
Then, once it was finished, I just kinda left it there. I've dug it up a couple times since, but I never went out of my to edit it or make a cover for it. For a while, it didn't even have a proper name. But, while I was looking through my docs yesterday, I came across it again, decided to give it a name, a little polish, a cover, and posted it up here because Why Not lol.
And that's the story of how this story came to exist. I'm not as happy with it as I like to be with the things I post, but that's also part of why I posted it anyway. Lately, I've been getting into the habit of being too perfectionist, and I'm trying to shake it before it becomes a problem again.
Anyway, if you haven't read it yet, I hope you will, and I hope you enjoy it when you do. If you have read it, I very much appreciate that, and I hope you liked it.
