Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with another movie review for tonight! This evening, I will be reviewing The Mummy Returns from 2001! This sequel was worth watching and enjoyable in almost every way as it contains awesome action, good storytelling, fun characters, unexpected twists, and a roller coaster adventure. It may not be as amazing as the first movie, but it is still pretty great nonetheless. So here are my remaining thoughts on this epic adventure of The Mummy Returns:

This follows the events of the first movie; Rick O’Connell and his family face a returning enemy they thought they have defeated before. But this time, he comes back with a deadly vengeance as well as a plan to involve another ancient being known as the Scorpion King. Evelyn O’Connell soon discovers that she too has an Egyptian past that can unlock certain ancient mysteries long forgotten.

Right off the bat, I want to mention how interesting it was to make her more directly involved in the story. I was honestly surprised she had a history with Meela and how much they spent time developing her character from that point on. I’m thankful they made this twist earlier in the film and not towards the end because then it would feel too late-minute and an afterthought.

As far as The Rock’s character is concerned, I wasn’t honestly satisfied with what they did with him. He had very little screen time and didn’t do much for the plot. His acting was great though, and he certainly seemed menacing as a character. Unfortunately, I’m not a huge fan of this antagonist since he didn’t do much for the story despite what the poster made me think of him.

Aside from that, the action and the storyline are what made this film solid. Every time our main characters were in imminent danger, I would be at the edge of my seat and hope at least all of them would make it out alive. But the moment Evelyn was fatally stabbed by Anck-Su-Namun, I was dumbfounded at that moment. But imagine my reaction when she came back to life by the classic Deus Ex Machina. I internally chuckled at that moment because of how cliche it was, but hey, it is what it is.

Imhotep was just as intimidating and compelling as the main antagonist as before. Only this time, he seemed more headstrong and cunning as he seems like he has just what he needs to succeed and get exactly what he wants. I really do admire Arnold Vosloo’s acting in these films.

The same can be said for Brendan Fraser, John Hannah, Rachel Weisz, Oded Fehr, and Patricia Velásquez. All of them were amazing in their respective roles from start to finish.

I especially liked how they instilled comedic moments here and there to lighten the dark mood in this movie. Add that with the decent soundtrack, the flawless visual effects, CGI, and amazing cinematography, it makes this movie experience a lot more enjoyable! So I highly recommend this to those of you who enjoyed the first movie and see for yourselves how awesome it is. Thus, I give it a 9/10!

Peace!

I love this trilogy

I agree. “The Mummy Returns” was a truly worthwhile and fun sequel.

Personally, I also think Universal should’ve stopped with this one, because the third movie in the series was rather…mediocre among others.

The Mummy Returns is as solid a follow-up as one could ask for and I love the callback to the first with Jonathan and a spellbook.

This really is a decent follow-up to an already pretty entertaining adventure flick.

I guess my only major problem is a certain visual effect seen during the third act.

An effect which will forever live... in infamy.
