Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with another movie review for today! This afternoon, I will be reviewing Disenchanted, a 2022 sequel to the 2007 predecessor. I honestly never expected Disney to greenlit a sequel, but here we are in a day and age where reboots and sequels are endless. Normally, they do this with zero thought and without an ounce of originality. In this case, however, it proved to be quite an exceptional piece of enjoyment. This movie definitely holds up as a worthy successor to the first film and proves itself to the world that a sequel can be well-written if enough heart and passion are put into it.

This film is set ten years after the events of the first film; Giselle and Robert have a baby whereas Morgan is now a teenager. Unhappy with her new home and annoyed by the efforts of her stepmother trying to make things easy for her, Morgan expresses anger toward Giselle. Now the latter resorts to making a wish to make reality a fairytale. She gets exactly what she wished for, but it comes with a price--a fatal price.

I gotta say that the movie did a great job continuing the story the first film left off; we can see that obviously life isn't always sunshine and rainbows which is the number one lesson we are reminded of every single day. Giselle is raising her baby, is married to Robert, is trying to be a loving mother to Morgan, and wants the latter to be happy. To be fair, this is something I find both realistic and relatable. Children aren't always fond of stepparents, but eventually, both parties get to know each other and learn to spend time with one another so they can form a better relationship as a family. Seeing Morgan's relationship with Giselle play out like this in the movie was quite well-executed.

The acting was phenomenal too, and I was so happy to see the original cast return for this film. The soundtrack, the songs, and the choreography were all splendid as well. Alan Menken never disappoints me with his excellent composing.

Even though there were fewer animated scenes this time, it was refreshing to see 2D animation on the big screen once again. However, I really wish the film spent more with Morgan in Andalasia so that she could explore the world Giselle came from and see for herself what it is like to dwell in the actual land of fantasy. Plus, it would have been perfect if Morgan gets to see what the world had to offer so that she could understand her mother a lot better. I get that there were more important issues at hand, but it would have been nice for 2D animation to get more screen time, you know?

As far as the subplot of Giselle turning into an evil stepmother is concerned, it was surprisingly well-developed. That alone signified how Morgan's rude remark was taken to heart, turning that fear into her worst nightmare. The only thing that didn't make any sense to me was Pip turning into an evil cat. He didn't have any scenes that depicted him fearing evil cats, so it came completely out of nowhere. Otherwise, this subplot was one of the best story elements therein.

Malvina Monroe, on the other hand, wasn't as menacing as Queen Narissa. Granted, she was an interesting antagonist, but her overall role didn't make it click for me. Maya Rudolph did a great job, and I'm not gonna disagree with that, but the way they wrote her character felt so flimsy to me. Her annoying subordinates were a lot worse than her and should have been removed from the film entirely.

Overall, this isn't a perfect successor at all, but it is still just as amazing as Enchanted. Therefore, I will rate it a solid 9/10!

Peace!

Before this review was posted, I thought that you were likely gonna be doing a rant on this sequel because of the mixed to negative reputation it received upon release.

However, I was both surprised and happy that this turned out to be something you enjoyed, because it encouraged me to check it out for myself at some point in the future. The reception it received beforehand caused me to feel hesitant of ever checking it out, but now...my interest in seeing it has been renewed.

🙂Thanks, Dude.

Thanks :)

I no longer take requests, but I'll consider those films for the future nonetheless.

Ah okay. But eh just though you might like to check them out.

But O do recommend you check out starship troopers more than just one watch through for the first movie.
