Another good chapter. And I'm thinking that draconic scout was looking for James, so that Ember could visit to apolosize, or something like that.
This was a really good chapter for continuing along nearly every one of the plots and subplots that have been building over the course of the past two arcs. Starlight Glimmer being unpersoned, secret polyamory, pirate cosplayers, confused feelings with Ember, even that bizarre dream with Twilight, it's all there and furthered just enough along to satisfy. Gilda showing up was a surprise, but I guess she probably would have at some point. I feel like she's going to have some kind of defining moment in the near future.
So Twilight and James have officially cooled things off. Well, maybe not cooled, just more like set back to simmer. I like that, since it makes this whole thing more realistic. Not every pair of people who get together and have a lot going for them are destined to become soulmates, even if there's never a point they really ever fall out. Sometimes things just kind of stabilize somewhere unless you push to develop it more, which he doesn't seem to have the time or desire to do.
amazing story as always keep it up man

Hey dude what chapter did Luna kiss James there are so many chapters I kinda forgot 🤔 and when James meet Luna
10465218
Don’t remember.
I absolutely love this story, it’s an amazing work that’s hard to put down. Honestly, this is the best HiE story to have been written and I support this to insane amounts. Seeing it going this far is great to me as well! I actually have some neat ideas for characters to add if your willing to hear me out and discuss. If not than that’s fine, just keep doing what your doing and I hope to see more in the future!

This is one of the super-longs I've been looking at reading but I'm mildly concerned with the downvote ratio? According to the description it's being edited slowly, can anyone comment on whether the un-edited portion is really that bad? My gut tells me it couldn't be what with its popularity but...
10470257
Many of the downvotes came during a different time when there was a significant portion of the fandom that had a very hostile outlook on anyone who voiced any criticism of humanity's failings when compared to how much more idealistic a world Equestria is by comparison. Many of these users downvoting stories with such content, no matter how infrequent it came up, just because that the story contains that kind of criticism while not being able to distinguish valid criticism from actual misanthropy.
Thankfully, this "criticism = misanthropy" mindset has all but died out by this point. Most likely due to such criticism being much more valid today than it was 10 years ago seeing as how the world of today is significantly worse off than back then. Unfortunately, many of these users are no longer active on this site, even though their misguidedly biased downvotes remain in affect. As for everyone else who are downvoting, if I am doing something wrong, nobody is telling me how I can improve.
All I can say is take the ratio with a grain of salt. My works do not bend to whims of popular trends. This story's downvote ratio isn't entirely accurate or representative of its quality since many who did have since changed their tune while no longer being active on this site. Many of the downvotes came during a different time in the fandom and it's safe to assume that many who did leave negative votes probably don't even remember doing so by now.

I can respect that. I was more concerned about technical spelling/grammar problems (I can work around minor things but some stories are like falling down an up escalator that is also moving dangerously fast, and it's difficult to get into the story itself when you have to re-read the last paragraphs over again to make sure you understood what is even happening). I'll probably fast track this to the front of my HIE binge list because I'm a disgusting addict. Always good to see an author that is still active after 8 years as well!
Sad to see stories downvoted for disagreement over story tone or morals.
(Also I'm intrigued by the 'everything-but-the-kitchen-sink' bagel that is the story tags, and damn those are some long chapters)
10470324
I take everything in my work very seriously and am never disrespectful to the source material, so the narrative quality is not an issue here. It’s well within ones right to hold works in contempt when the tone is inherently disrespectful of the message and morals of the source material or when the morals are handled poorly and without tact, such as Diaries of a Madman or the entire Fallout Equestria subgenre. The worst you will find in my chapters that haven't been edited yet are the occasional typo.
As for the tags exceeding the standard limits, that’s because life isn’t just one genre. You’ll find a bit of everything in my work.
10473121
For real, but they still have nothing on the 97k chapter I stumbled across in a 1.2m story.
10482114
There’s a chapter of that length in this story too. I just had to split it in half because even I know that is too much for one chapter.
10483501
its sad for people that just started reading this amazing fimfiction when they are not even close to the best parts of the story
10483501
You can't kill him.....
.....He is just a fictional Character.....
10492689
I saw what?
Wow, so Discord is dead for the entire book? You just killed one of the funniest characters.
10495961
I hope that is not a problem.
10496136
Not really. I mean he IS obviously the funniest villain besides Storm King.
10496576
About an Fictional Character?????
GROW UP!!!
10497046
Plenty of tragedies in media the world over illicit tears from their viewers. And all of them are works of fiction, as are the characters that viewers weep for.
And yes. Most who do read and cry at tragedies are grown ups.
Please do not antagonize my readers who are not afraid to let themselves get emotional during the heavier sections of my work. I will not say this twice.
10497046
You first.
10497656
I am 31 Years!
10497657
Could have fooled me.
10497405
You can ban me if you want,i don't care anymore.....
10497405
And there I go thinking the author's job was to evoke emotion, which you do rather well.
First, I apologize for the late review, but let us now dive into it.
While it is nice that James has such generous accommodations during this newfound ordeal, I wonder if he feels bad for his friends who have to sleep in tents. I know I do. Still, it makes sense, given his position in the army. He does have more experience than anyone else in these types of situations, even more so than Nightmare Moon, and compared to what he and his friends have faced in the past, this is not just a battle; the event of the last chapter wa Equestria's first step towards war. Still, it is nice to know that they have a safe and secure place to get some rest and relaxation between battles.
It certainly is a relief for James to be surrounded by those he cares about again. Referencing "One Upon a Time" yet again, having those who care for you by your side is one of the best ways to help you hold your ground in trying times, ranging from disputes to war. A part of me questions if Fluttershy would have been there if Gladesong was not around, as sad as it sounds. In times like this, they need all of the help they can get. For now, we can only hope that she is fairing well with Scootaloo, Smolder and her other friends back in Ponyville.
There's just something about considering Rarity a part of his family that I find beautiful, especially given how that subject has been elaborated time and again. Also, it is understandable that she and the others would have trouble adjusting, but at least they are paired adequately.
Speaking of loved ones, it was also pleasant to see that Princess Celestia owned up to her supposed error back in 'Sins of Humanity.' It is also obvious that, just like everyone else, Princess Celestia hoped for the best in regards to James’ safety, just like Nightmare Moon and Rarity. If she did make a poor move in the eyes of her sister before she left Canterlot, then she has hopefully made up for it. If not yet, then soon.
Again, we see Celestia using, what would be, a unicorn's, or an alicorn's, personal form of telepathy. I can certainly see such magic as being practical.
Brownie points to you for that insight on the Royal Guard's armor and their future battle strategies. Very informative.
Here is a funny thought; it is almost a pity that the royals sisters could not have brought more of the enchanted liquid with them. That would certainly save the blacksmiths the trouble of making completely new sets of armor. Then again, who knows how many that liquid metal can serve before it is gone.
Also, given how far from civilization they are, it is reassuring that they will be receiving continuous resupplies and volunteers.
I am also glad that we saw Twilight Sparkle shine a little more here. I feel like we have not had much spotlight on her lately, but that could just be me. Anyway, it was interesting to semi-see her within her element within the magic 'research' and 'development' facilities.
I also found that tender time between James and Twilight to be rather touching. Although they have shared some tender moments since they became closer, we have not heard anything in relation to where they stand since ‘Closing the Year;’ Part One. At the very least, they have confirmed where they now stand. They are in a good place; no harm, no foul.
I can understand why Rainbow Dash would be upset over finding out about James relationship with Fluttershy and Rarity, especially after the events of ‘Closing the Year, Part Two.’
The amount of lesser characters included and mentioned within this chapter was a welcome surprise; Sunburst, Sunset Shimmer, Vinyl Scratch/DJPon3, Octavia Melody, Captain Calaeno and her Crew, Fancy Pants, Prince Blueblood, Estoc, Lightning Dust, Maud Pie, Spitfire, Zecora, Dragon Lord Ember, even someone else whom I was not expecting with the former...………..Gilda.
First and foremost, we are introduced to Sunburst; yet another post-Season Two character whom you were able to find potential in. As per usual, you took what the brand's continuity presented you and built upon it; I would expect no less from you. Your added depth to Sunburst's backstory truly builds him into a more solid character. I can certainly picture his efforts taking him far when the war is over. In truth, I was not expecting to see him in your works at all.
On another note, it is an interesting thought; the understandings of magic's use and how it works being two separate things.
Also, that one line...
Was that meant to be a reference to the Brony/Pegasister Fandom's male version of Twilight, Dusk Shine? If it was, that was clever.
Speaking of which, it is interesting how you worked that whole 'synonym' discussion into James and Sunburst's conversation. It was like a reminder of how creative Bronies and Pegasisters can be when writing stories, creating videos and avatars, etcetera. Also, you can see several instances of that within the brand; some of the main examples including Twilight Sparkle, Dusk Shine (male Twilight), Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer. Still, even without synonyms, it would be slightly amusing to see an instance where one character is misunderstood for another, especially if they share the same name. Personally, I have seen many fan original characters who share the same name, which only proves my point.
I did not expect James to come into contact with Vinyl Scratch/DJPon3 again. We have known about Octavia Melody for years, but she and James were lucky to just notice each other if they were in the same room together, and given how far along we are in the story before James actually has a conversation with either of them.....Well......better late than never. To add to that, I find her role in this war to be quite.....unexpected at most. Is it supposed to be something along the lines of what her human counterpart did in "Rainbow Rocks?"
I noticed that you stuck with both show, and most fan, continuity in regards to Octavia being a Ponyville native and having Vinyl as a roommate (at least ).
Out of curiosity, what that meant to be a "Slice of Life" reference in some ways.
I had my suspicions about Captain Celaeno and her Hapless Harpy Pirate Crew () showing up in this battle, and this chapter proved my guess to be correct. That moment of tug-a-war between Rainbow and Captain Celaeno with James was rather comical. I am a little surprised of how James never told anyone else about the events of his capturing outside of Twilight, Shining Armor and the Royal Sisters. I am looking forward to the point when they all get better acquainted.
Tit for tat, Mullet; tit for tat. I can’t say that he didn’t deserve James’ little prank after what he did to him.
It is nice to see that Celaeno and her crew maintain their musical qualities from the movie, but I didn’t expect Mullet to pull a Pinkie Pie with the musicians.
I’m sorry. That just said ‘Animal from the Muppets’ to me; particularly, the introduction of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem from “The Muppet Movie."
Trash barge? I’d prefer the label ‘gargabe barge’ myself.
In truth, I am surprised that Rarity would take interest in the Celaeno’s attire.
That is an interesting thought, to be sure.
Your introduction of Gilda was yet another surprise for this chapter. I have only seen two interpretations of her making herself known again; the latter being within the show itself. It's no surprise that she would be put off by what, and who, James actually is, instantly going off first impressions from the previous day. Naturally, James is not in the war for glory or thrills, but for what is in his heart. I would not be surprised if that is why most, if not everyone else, baring Gilda, are with him in the first place.
Oddly, I never even considered Gilda as being bisexual or a lesbian, let alone being paired with the likes of Rainbow Dash or Lightning Dust (foreshadowing, in more ways than one, I take it?).
Gilda's apology to James, and taking "it all back," reminds me of another fanfic I have read many times. It is a retelling of a film story and in said fan interpretation, we have the chance to see the tough one of the group apologizing for overstepping boundaries some time previously.
I did not expect to see Gilda three separate times in this chapter; let alone towards the start of the night. Along with being bisexual, I never would have taken her for a musician either. Still, it’s nice to see that, like Rainbow, Gilda can be calm and collected when she wants to be. Having once played a string instrument myself and having a penchant for classical sounding music, I understand how James and Gilda were feeling about the latter’s guitar playing.
It seems that Gilda and James had quite the heart-to-heart in this chapter. It makes me wonder what their future encounters will be like, or Rainbow’s for that matter. As for Gilda, I would say that she is on the road to recovery.
I’m starting to become cautiously intrigued with the presence of Lightning Dust. If her appearances on television have proven anything, she and Rainbow haven’t gotten on well since she almost hurt Rainbow’s friends. I’m hoping that, much like Diamond Tiara and Trixie, Lightning and Gilda will both be set on the right path. 🤞
On the subject of your interpretation on post-Season Two material, I see that you are moving forward with Maud Pie as well. Like on television, she is considering Ponyville as a new home, but this time, she is keeping her sister out of it. While some would see that as a way of keeping Pinkie Pie's over-the-top insistence off her back, I also see it as a way for Pinkie to not jump to insistence before everything is finalized. Also, I find it to be comforting that another secondary character will be taking up residence in James' home town. It just rubs me the right way, somehow.
Zecora was yet another welcome surprise. With her knowhow of potions, medicines, and natural elements, her knowledge is bound to prove its worth on the front line. It can be mindboggling with how true the zebra’s old stories were, and how James’ first encounter with her is brought back to light due to current events.
That circling dragon scout was odd. Dragon Lord Ember likely sent it, but the question is, why? Did someone take note of the band of ponies passing by? Does Ember sense trouble? Did see send someone out to find James so she could speak with him again and make amends? These questions have yet to be answered, but one thing is for sure. Although James and Ember parted ways on less then ideal terms, it is more than clear that Ember does not hate him; likely she was just in denial in regards to the truth. Still, whatever has happened, or will happen, I hope that they can find peace eventually.
Personally, I have little knowledge of how any form of alcoholic beverage can be beneficial to an army, but it is still comforting to see Fancy Pants, and even Prince Blueblood, contributing to the war effort. As far as the latter is concerned, like James, I probably wouldn't have believed it either. I also have to give you points on the mishandling of Fancy's personal stash.
We have had many flashbacks to who Rainbow Dash used to be in this chapter. As with everyone, it is amazing to see how far she has come since her younger days and when Twilight first met her. I can certainly say that one of her better qualities was standing up for others at the time; especially Fluttershy. James was true and to the point in regards to their current situation; when it comes to pressing issues like war, the safety of others is the first priority.
Do you remember me saying and pointing out how various pieces of your writing seem to mirror other pieces of both literature and media? Well, from where I am sitting, one section of James' conversation with Nightmare Moon was no exception. Simply put, this section reminds me of a film I have seen many times. Have you ever heard of "Train Quest?" If you have not, I recommend checking it out. True, it is not the greatest film in the world, but its story still intrigues me. I'll spare you the details for the sake of space, but in regards to what I mean, below is the particular section of the chapter and a video clip to follow.
1:03:21 - 1:04:07
That event in the Spring still plagues Nightmare Moons mind, huh? I am not surprised. Surely, experiencing something like that could scar a person for life, or longer.
On another note, this is the second time in recent chapters that we have seen James feeling conflicted feelings about where he stands with the Princess of Dreams. Personally, I am intrigued to see where this leads.
You know, I've noticed that, much like me, every so often, your writing and/or dialogue seems to catch onto a particular word or form for a while before going onto another. Currently the word is 'normalcy,' which has been around since the chapter entitled 'Return to Normalcy.' Not only that, but I see the label 'body bag' being tossed around a lot here.
Also, vow of silence? Where those words influenced by your recent chapter featuring the kirin, 'The Land of Scilence?' It is something that I seem to have noticed; if you feature characters or reenact something from a certain point on the show, small bits and pieces from those characters, or episodes, seems to slip into the story’s text.
Anything else that I can mention about this chapter are small bits and pieces that do not seem to fit anywhere else.
I’m think a lot of us know how that feels, if not all of us.
That was a clever move on working your songs featured with the story into the story itself.
Mr. Grinch? HAHA! I'm sorry, I just had to mention that!
I had completely forgotten that drunken dream of Twilight's until reading this. Awwwkwarrrrrrd.
I wonder if this means what I think it means.
Well, being back at home with no potential conflict would probably help.
Yet more possible foreshadowing?
Horses doing horse things, much?
Silly James.
I suppose kissing her on the forehead would be very difficult.
That is about all that I can say for this chapter. I will admit that it is not as colorful as others that I have done, but I hope it is satisfactory enough. What lies in store for James and the others next? While there is more than one way to find out, but the most enjoyable is to read on.
Great story, read the prequel as well and lots of g1 references throughout both, really cool way to make a fleshed out backstory
