My my, how things turn. The true rulers of Equestria are finally here, and their respective first impressions are murder and a dad joke. The battle against Sunflare was something else, and highly touching.
I think most of us saw the gist coming of the twist that humanity and the Emperor's returns were not coincidence. The fact that James is literally the Emperor's horcrux though, now that's a surprise. I'd say he has to sleep with one eye open from now on, but I think Rain Shine has that covered. On that note, I really wasn't expecting Ember to do that. It's a good thing they bonded so much, if it weren't those nights spent together he might've just been dead!
I figure the Ponyville gang wasn't all in the loop about the full details of James's brush with the Sun Goddess, otherwise I figure they'd be freaking out a lot more if past events are anything to go by.
My heart was in my mouth, with Sunflare's and Orbash's arrival on the scene. That you've mentioned them so rarely in any work thus far and now introduce them is... well I knew it was bad before. But this...
Each new revelation just makes me feel helpless to assist our hero on the quest. He has help, yes, but what he needs are options. With each additional aide he has gained more options, but they're still limited by magic or by number (referring to the non-standard units in play). All of them offer something that while conventional are niche roles that have to be filled in the field. But they are still that, conventional.
I had half a mind (not that this is possible, mind) to crash the party with some paracausality and drop a ward of dawn on James's head. Let Sunflare tangle with the most enduring of all paracausal beings, a maximum resilience and recovery Titan.
Or to make an analogy you may understand better, a Sigma Virus body that regenerates or reconstitutes after destruction, wielding space magic that is a layer of rules above and parallel to our typical understanding of the laws of cause and effect, including but not limited to the suppression of all magic/supernatural powers and strengths. And this body is on James's side, with no intent to spread, or be malicious.
If you've got me thinking "I need to find a way to join the fight", then you're doing it right.
Why is the emperor doing this....he has to know that his old civilization is in ruins......but humanity has returned to Equestria with James's arrival, so he does have subjects again......my thinking is that James may be inheriting the Emperor's crown when they reach The Heavens Pillar....maybe......it's one way I see things playing out.....we shall have to see!
Honestly I was not expecting Sunflare and Orbash at all! My mind was on a dozen other beings showing up and those two totally slipped my mind! If they both showed up then just how much of a menace is the emperor?!
I wonder how Sunflare is going to react to the relationship between James and Celestia ? oOoOO how mad is she going to get!
This entire story has focused so much of James and the friendships and relationships he has made with so many beings across the planet, surely there will be some way to save him from this connect he has to the emperor? I mean even Ember couldn't go through with killing James! Ugh I can't wait to see how this resolves !!
* Might I add that Celestia redeemed herself after not going after James when he first left Equestria to find and defeat the emperor! How Nightmare Moon chastised her for not having the spine to stand up to James and go with him. To put herself between James and her own mother, even after seeing how ruthless and calculating Sunflare acted towards James was such a huge sign of love Celestia has for him!

People don’t act the way you do on the internet without provocation unless there’s something wrong with them. I’m most curious of what a mental health evaluation would find in you.
This behavior isn’t acceptable towards anyone on this site. Think long and hard about yourself before you say anything else next time to type into a comment box.
Wait, if Volume 5 is up to the chapter “Child of the Glade,” what do the chapters after it belong to? Do they still belong to Volume 5, or is it an entirely new Volume?

I forgot to end the previous sub volume with a header. Should be fixed now. The cover arts also signify the beginning of a new volume.
Man, you know how to throw in some twists don't ya!
I was wondering when we would meet the royal parents...never thought it would be like this though.

May I ask what the standouts of this chapter were?
11243838
Mostly the queen and Ember.
1-I could get behind her actions, even if they were heavy handed. She cares for her country, regardless of not being physically present mist of the time, and would do anything to protect it from a threat like the emperor. (Of course, I also don't want Our hero dead by any means)
2-The scene with ember shortly after James returned to camp was one of the more emotionally draining ones I've read in your entire book. She had to mentally fight between ending the war early and keeping the only person she reslly has bonded with so far alive, and you wrote it perfectly.
That, and the connection between the bad guy and James suprised me as well, though it makes sense in retrospect
Dang, she did not have to do Nightmare Moon like that. That was cold, ironically.
Whooee! What a rollercoaster ride this was.
To be perfectly honest, I did not anticipate King Orbash and Queen Sunflare making themselves known so early in this story, let alone this war, and boy, did they leave a big first impression, the understatement of the chapter, most likely.
I wouldn't be surprised if some readers got a flash of deJa'vu from what occurred in the middle of this chapter; James' acquaintances, friends and loved ones shielding him from Sunflare's wrath. It almost mirrors the Mane Six protecting Nightmare Moon from Princess Celestia.
Kirin chieftain Rain Shine; quite possibly one of the few beings on the planet whose power can rival that of the Royal Sisters' parents. That was some true care, loyalty and devotion she presented to the Queen.
I will say that there is one part of James' and Sunflare's battle that confuses me.
From the way you described James battling the Queen, it sounded like he was trying to avoid the edges of the sun-flame dome at all costs as it would mean instant death for him, further proven by his burnt magical wings, and yet, the flames bearly left more than a scratch on his armor, let alone him. Did he just pass through it that fast to avoid even so much as burning himself?
Who would've thought that the Last Emperor would be using James' own lifeforce to sustain himself? What a game-changer that has turned out to be. On the bright side, as dire as the situation has become, the more protective James' acquaintances, friends and loved ones have become of him. It just goes to show how much they truly care for him.
While it is odd how determined Sunflare was to end Equestria's threat once and for all, it is interesting how she too feels apposed to Celestia's possible future plans for Twilight Sparkle. And that laugh she had at the mess hall......This Sunflare feels like quite the complicated person.
Thankfully, the same cannot be said for Orbash. Strong, handsome and pleasant with a heart of gold, it's no wonder that he has so many gawkers in his presence. I wouldn't be surprised if his friendly nature could rival that of the hippogriffs.
The King and Queen of Equestria really are polar opposites of each other, aren't they? What you might call literal ying-and-yang.
I will admit that Dragon Lord Ember's scene was rather scary and intense. To think that Ember would stoop that low. Definitely a moment of weakness. To both her and Sunflare, doing away with James was the only way to avoid Equestria's eventual fall to submission. Thankfully, they were proven that, if you'll excuse the quote from Belle, "taking shortcuts, or the easy way out, isn't always the best solution." I certainly hope that James, Ember and Sunflare can all move on from that. Of course, if Celestia and Nightmare Moon can, so can they.
I don't know if it was intentional to add various illusions to this chapter, but I could identify several.
The way King Orbash and Queen Sunflare bounce off each other is rather reminiscent of the Queen of Hearts and her King from the original Disney adaption of Alice in Wonderland. While the Queen rules with an iron fist, so to speak, the King shows a more caring side and does not always support her decisions, if any.
Sunflare constantly trying to push James into the wall of sun-flames surrounding them felt quite similar to when James the Red Engine and Mr. Conductor's cousin, Junior, were directly faced with Diesel 10 in Thomas and the Magic Railroad. The diesel was forcedly coaxing James towards the Smelter's Yard's melting pit until Junior managed to use the last of his gold dust to teleport them away to Lady the Magical Golden Engine's Grotto.
As for James' scene with Ember, do I really need to say it? That almost mirrored when the Huntsman tried to kill Snow White. The difference being that the Huntsman was following orders under threat.
I certainly did not expect that the King and Queen would remain with the infantry. I will admit that I am rather curious about what they can bring to the table. Well, that's for the future chapter/s to explain, isn't it?

Did you forget about the shield on his arm?
11451707
No, I didn't forget that.
With someone (supposedly) as mighty as Queen Sunflare, I simply thought that no other magical might would stand up to hers, not even James' armor, the Celestial Sword, or the Lunar Shield.
11457166
The Lunar Shield is explicitly designed to be indestructible.
