Volume 1 has a whole lot of, as TVTropes would call it, "Early Season Weirdness". In this case, the chapter you just finished reading is as of just recently over 10 years old, and also the author's very first horse words.
Leaving a comment before I read. WOOOO, NEXT CHAPPY! Let's see what shenanigans happen now hehehe
Edit: Oooooh boy that was one doozy of a chapter. Hotheads getting too big for their britches, lovers keeping secrets and creating distrust between one another, and the sketchiness of the Emperor's tactics. Definitely getting really interesting. Amazing stuff as always, Humanity!

You really can't blame it for emerging back then I think. In its heyday the MLP fandom here went through a crazy misanthropic phase as you likely remember. A time when, among many other things, authors fantasized about all mankind being forcefully transformed into peaceloving equines. Like most cultural phenomena though, a counterculture spawned that although I generally agree with more, often failed to understand who and what they really should be opposing.
I sense a moment coming when ember and gilda are going to join James’s herd, most likely next chapter, ember first, then finding out about smolder and her confirming my thought that she is older then we think, then after talking it over James goes to see Gilda and she ends up joining him as payment for saving her tail feathers. All the while him and celestia keep getting more distant from each other. With it ending with James doggy piled by all these girls of his. Maybe celestia tells him what her plan is, he explains how twilight will be devastated when her friends pass away from age since they won’t ascend like her. Small rant/tangent done.
I hope the Equestrians and allies don't let this early victory go to their heads. A small part of me thinks things will not go so well in later battles.
Damn, Lightning Dust was a moron and her actions definitely deserved punishment. Endangering your allies like that is so insanely idiotic.
I hope that isn't the last we see of of Sunset Shimmer. I find her to be a much more interesting character that Starlight Glimmer. If Shimmer's parting words were anything to go by, I wonder how much of a threat she will end up being? Especially with her seemingly burning hatred for Celestia.
Speaking of Celestia, I wonder how badly all her scheming/manipulating will sit with James? He's shown that he prefers when people are straightforward and honest with their intentions and actions. The love and relationship between James and Celestia might give her a bit of leeway in that regard, but I don't think James will be anywhere near onboard with her plans for Twilight. Hopefully James manages to make Celestia see the error of her ways, and their relationship doesn't sour.
Nice picture, it looks like something you would see out of Dungeons & Dragons. Whoever did the artwork is cool.

Lightning Dust stunt is worse than Leeroy Jenkins dashing in. At least when Leeroy Jenkins engages in battle with no plan, it's funny. Lightning's stunt on the other hand/hoof is carelessly stupid.
That bit of art is amazing! That is all.
Man, wasn't expecting the James against Celestias grand plans situation...I kinda like it.
Great chapter, man!
man the image in the end of the chap is totally badass
Well, it's been over a year, but I've finally managed to read one of these chapters properly.
I have a lot to catch up on and I don't have much to say for this chapter, but given how long my reading-hiatus has been, I feel that I owe you this much, at least.

We finally get a taste of what a true battle will be like during this war. Everyone is, truly, better prepared than James thought. Still, at the same time, the Emperor appears to be learning from their previous encounters in order to allow his armies to come back stronger. However, James and the others still seem to have the upper hand/hoof/claw (), so they should be set going forward; at least, for a while.
Sunset Shimmer's former position and reason for being present finally comes out. I'm not surprised at how James feels about Twilight Sparkle's possible future, especially if what we've already read in the sequel, "Return of Humanity," is anything to go by. I can only hope that he and Princess Celestia don't stay on rough terms for too long. 🤞
I'm surprised that both Sunset and Lightning Dust were sent off as soon as they were. I wonder when we will see both of them again.
I admit that I feel that Spitfire slapping Lightning across the face like that seems a little extreme, even for a pony. In truth, it's the only part of this chapter that I question. Maybe I just need a different perspective.
I hadn't expected Sunset to be Trixie's roommate during the battle. I think it's rather nice that she's been paired with Gilda now. Those two do have a lot in common and I'm surprised we never saw them together on the show. I'm looking forward to seeing where their potential friendship goes.
I was actually fooled when the table's started filling at the mess hall. I was sure that James was being surrounded by Captain Celaeno and her crew rather than the hippogriffs; not that I thought that it was unwelcome, of course.
I do feel a little unsure about James, Smolder and Ocellous keeping the young changeling's true identity secret like that, but, on the other hand, I suppose they don't want to start a panic, given the circumstances. After all, Fluttershy didn't want to add more stress to their past trial either, hence why she kept her pregnancy a secret until James was on the road to recovery.
I think that it was rather clever how Nightmare Moon decided to use her makeshift house for Ember's 'office.' It is nice how she has her own personal space within the camp and I'm looking forward to her future development as both an ally and a friend.

As I said, it's not much, but I hope that you find this review to be satisfactory, at least. As for me, the reading continues. 📖
