Fiction is better than canon if the canon work is pretty bad, especially when it comes to fix fics, and with this, the bad canon work should be acknowledged as non-canon. Canon is better as it is when the canon work is done very well, though that doesn't mean the fans can't come up with their ideas, theories and headcanons.
