I think that in order to really do something great, and to create awesome stuff, you need to challenge yourself.

Sure, you don't need to push a boulder up a hill every single day. I find challenging myself to write something every day, if even just a few paragraphs, does help me write in general though.

Ah, writing short stories is fun. Writing short, little, teeny-tiny self contained pockets of madness or sadness or badness is awesome.

The annoying thing is when you can't stop that short one-shot turning into some fairly long story--especially when you only wanted a short story in the first place.
