I've participated in a lot of the /fic/ mini write-offs, where stories were limited to a maximum of 750, 400, or 300 words. It's a great writing exercise. Many of those stories don't lose anything by being longer and giving extra context, mood, or even additional plot threads. When I can, I'll stretch those ones out (the good ones, anyway) to 2500 words or more so they become eligible for Equestria Daily, but there are some good ones in there that simply wouldn't hold up to that much of an
