Music SIG Likes #43 :: Trevor Green · 3:34am Apr 18th, 2017

Some more folkish music again. I do not know much about Trevor Green; there is a dearth of information out there on the internet concerning his band (as it seems to happen with these sort of bands), but I enjoy his work. He makes extensive use of didgeridoos in his songs which give it a unique flair.

Music SIG Likes #20 :: Volbeat (part deux) · 2:21am Jul 19th, 2016

Volbeat has come through again with their new album Seal The Deal & Let's Boogie.

An absolutely delicious mix of hard-rock and rockabilly, with a little gospel choir thrown into the mix. Seriously though, if you have enjoyed their previous works, you own it to yourself to purchase (save up if necessary!) this album.

Something light and fluffy; pop with a measure of folk and a hint of jazz. Ebullient, cheerful, and upbeat, Lonely Drifter Karen always seems to bring a smile to my face whenever she pops up on my playlist

Music SIG Likes #2 :: Volbeat · 4:01am Jan 23rd, 2016

Now we start the actual "Music Sigawesome Likes" proper.

This is probably the "crown jewels" of my music collection; my #1, all time favourite band which I have purchased every CD they produced. Volbeat has a unique, distinctive sound that (to my inexperienced ears) sounds like 3 parts hard rock, mixed with two parts rockabilly with a little heavy metal mixed in for flavour; think old school Metallica and Elvis with a sprinkling of Johnny Cash.

Music SIG Likes #37 :: Narcotango · 12:38am Feb 20th, 2017

Some modern neo-tango courtesy of Argentine composer Carlos Libedinsky and his band Narcotango. It certainly is interesting; imagine a fusion of traditional tango swirled in with some dubstep and house. Essentially tango as interpreted by Vinyl Scratch. All the steamy sultriness of tango with a seasoning of modern, electronic dance beats.

Some dance-rock/dance-punk style music from Glasgow. Significant Other actually introduced me to them a while back. Not something I typically would have listened to, but it certainly has an upbeat, energetic feel to it. Perfect for dancing flailing enthusiastically around the flat or jumping on the bed, singing into a hairbrush "microphone".

An excellent British Folk Rock musician with a career spanning decades. My brother in law and father in law both introduced me to him. Quite talented certainly enjoyable to listen too if you have a penchant for folk-rock type music.

Music SIG Likes #18 :: The Unseen Guest · 2:08am Jun 6th, 2016

Some lovely down-tempo acoustic rock with a generous helping of folk. Unseen Guest's music certainly has a calm, laid back feel that is perfect (IMHO) for sitting quietly with a significant other (or friend) simply watching a light thunderstorm through an open door...

I think this is my all-time favourite band so far (just barely edging out Volbeat). I practically grew up listening to them thanks to my brothers. A delicious blend of prog rock, electronica, and space rock. A rather distinctive sound, especially with Matt Bellamy's impressive, boisterous vocals.

As Tom Lehrer said "One man deserves the credit, one man deserves the blame". I can thank Daedalus Aegle here for introducing me and Significant Other to Jason Webley's music. It is a nice blend of folk and punk which mixes manic violin and rhythmic guitar in equal measure.

Music SIG Likes #33 :: Rob Halford · 3:09am Dec 24th, 2016

What with it being (at time of writing) one day before Christmas, how about come classical Christmas hymns and carols arranged in heavy metal style by Rob Halford of Judas Priest fame?

Some more of that yummy yummy post-metal/post-rock tasty goodness! Sparowes leans more towards "post-rock" than metal compared with Russian Circles and Pelican. It also shades in to prog-rock territory at times. Still, all in all they are an excellent instrumental band to listen to in the background.

Quite enjoyable to listen to while at work.

Music SIG Likes #46 :: DOROTHY · 4:32am May 9th, 2017

Some hard rock from California today.

DOROTHY has an interesting mix of classic, old-school heavy metal and bluesey rock style. Think "Black Sabbath" + "White Stripes". The lead singer, Dorothy Martin, Has (IMHO) an incredibly energetic and powerful voice that is perfect for this music.

A spot of Country Western + Country Gothic courtesy of my fellow coworkers on the production floor. I am not sure how to describe his music. My vocabulary is woefully lacking (any music buffs got any suggestions?). All I can say is that his music that I have heard sounds like what the picture below looks like (if that makes any sense).

Music SIG Likes #54 :: Nick Cave · 3:23am Jul 27th, 2017

Nick Cave and his band Bad Seeds is something that I have recently (re)discovered thanks to my new co-worker, "Shoe", on the production floor. Been around longer than I (and I will wager most people reading this) have been alive. Really intense and emotional post-punk and gothic rock. Features American Southern Gothic imagery and themes quite heavily.

A bit dark, but quite enjoyable nonetheless.

Some soul mixed with a dab of hip-hop this time around. Musically it consists of some very light hip-hop style beats and samples that primarily serve to highlight his incredible (IMHO) voice.

So much emotion! Just listen to Human and Skin below!

Sadly, the rest of the album does not quite have the same emotional weight as Skin and Human, but for a first studio album, it is quite excellent. Here is hoping for more!

Lincoln Durham has an absolutely delicious fusion of blues and southern gothic with healthy helping of punk rhythms and alt-rock beats mixed in. Imagine if you will Brothter Dege mixed in with a grittier version of White Stripes.

He is also an impressive artist to see live (as are most one person bands).

The Call of Music, part 1. · 5:24pm Sep 19th, 2015

In the previous blog, i briefly mentioned two big influences, that of shadowrun, and the other, music. Music, is and always will be my choice of drug. Most of the love, came well, as a measure of solace. For many folks. A songs a song, and I get it it, even if I don't. Because my senses don't work like most peoples. I've been falsely labelled, misdiagnosed, and a variety of other things on that, but its, again, another topic for another day.
