First of all, this is not by a long shot the first time the mane six were kind of douchy. Lesson Zero, anyone? They all told Twilight to stfu, and look what happened.

Second, this episode was a long ass time ago.

Third, if the show creators actually decided to make everypony all 'aww, your feelings are hurt, you need a hug' then we'd pretty much have another trash-tier children's television show. Be thankful we have characters with real character flaws, including not taking their friends' problems seriously enough all the time.

Fourth, it's not like they're assholes, they actually went up to Rainbow's house to check in on her. Mind you, that's not an easy feat for 3 of them. They care about her. They also just happen to realize that she was overreacting. In fact, they weren't at all how you describe them. They cared, they just really didn't know how seriously Dash was taking it, or how to console her. Not to mention that she was inconsolable.

Fifth, Fluttershy hasn't become blunt, her character is just developing. FFS, Spike used to act like a literal baby. Twilight used to be sheepish and socially awkard. Characters change and progress, this is a good thing. It means the show's writers are... good, at what they do. Besides, Fluttershy isn't being blunt, she has just learned that sometimes you need to be...
