The dream may contain situations of danger, discomfort, psychological or physical terror. Sufferers often awaken in a state of distress and may be unable to return to sleep for a prolonged period.

In my experiences, they can last from five seconds to eight hours. One of the eight hours I went to Hell and was tormented for the entirety of the dream in countless different ways; nightmares usually don't involve a killer chasing me, but rather, the killer himself being me.
