Oath:
In Blackest Night, In Brightest Day
There must be balance, lest reality decay,
Chaos and Order, to neither I will sway,
Now gaze upon my power, the light of the Gray!

The Gray Lanterns came into existence at the end of the first Blackest Night, and the beginning of the first Brightest Day. The believe that to much of anything will corrupt and taint the natural order of the universe. The Grays are highly religious, believing that their work will return the universe to the original way The Presence left it as when he created it. They side with whoever they believe will bring balance to the universe, whether it be someone as pure as Superman, or as vile as Darkseid.
